Quick question... I have several apps that have asked me to rank order the professors I am interested in working with. I have one app in particular where I can't decide which professor to rank as my top choice - I really like them both! I've even thought about shoving them both on the #1 line!
Before I spend any more time obsessing about this, does the order in which I list them really make much of a difference? Will the number two pick be less likely to accept me for her lab?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Do they have extremely similar research interests? Professors understand that you often times have research interests that "fit" with one or more faculty, and my understanding is that the interview counts more for anything in terms of finding the right "fit". If I were you, I would just select a favorite at this point. If you interview there, you will likely interview with both and can refine it then (if your preference changes). For now, I think it's important to be upfront and to come off as having a specific "plan".

I think what is most essential is mentioning both professors in your personal statement. If you could see yourself working for either professor make it clear that you have equal interest in both research programs/projects. Then the rank order will only be a secondary rating at that point.

Thanks for the great advice. Just a few more days and I can take a break from thinking about this stuff!
