I'm working on my rank list, and I noticed that many of my top programs are also the most selective.

If the top 5 or so of your ranked programs are all competitive programs, and for some reason you don't get your #1 program, wouldn't that mean you would most likely get your safety program?

Has anyone matched at a competitive program with a #3 or lower rank?

What is the ratio of selective programs to safety programs, and where in your rank list are safety programs starting?

I'm sure someone has matched at a competitive program with a #3 or lower rank. remember, this is all in the applicant's favor. say you rank Penn #3, and they rank you #12. you don't get into your #1 and #2 program. but applicants #6 and#7 on Penn's list choose to go to MGH, and #8 and #9 go to UCSF. voila, you are gonna match at Penn.

besides this random example, you gotta remember that not everyone who interviews at a competitive program will rank that program in their top 3. there are always geographical issues, spouse who can't move, bad vibes, don't want to work that hard, etc.

if you are good enough to get five interviews at competitive programs, i'm almost positive you will match into one of them!!

on my list, out of 9, the last 4 are safety.
