I keep heard that X% (75%, 90%, whatever) of people match in their top three. I haven't seen any data to support this.

Does anyone know how true this statistic is? I know anecdotally most of the applicants from my school matched their top 1 or 2 last year, but that's obviously a small sample size.

I imagine it would vary based on how competitive one's top three program are.
 
I have no idea what the specific data is for Radiology but I will say that this is very much skewed by the fact that many people select based on geography.

Therefore someone might rank all the Chicago programs ahead of other excellent programs.
1. Northwestern
2. University of Chicago
3. Loyola/Rush
4. Loyola/Rush
5. University of Michigan
6. WUSTL
etc

Is very different from
1. Northwestern
2. WUSTL
3. University of Michigan
4. University of Chicago
5. Loyola/Rush
etc

The first scenario was a ranking based primarily off geography with priority of Chicago. The second had a limited geographic preference. The person with the first rank list is more likely to match into his top 3 or 5 or whatever than the second list.

And on another note. I matched at my #5 last year.

But you can bet on July 1st it will have magically become my #1 😉

Thanks for your response, I hadn't considered how geographic aspect plays into that.
 
What position do people generally 'fall to' on their prelim list?

I'm confident I'll match radiology with the length of my rank list, but I only have 5 prelim medicine spots and am a little worried.

I also am wondering this exact question. If anyone with actual experience in the match has any input, that would be great!
 
Completely impossible to predict.

Did you interview at large internal medicine prelims that are a difficult year? You won't fall very far.

Did you interview at the cushest prelim programs where you are competing with every Derm/RadOnc applicant? These programs are harder to match than radiology programs.
 
These things are close to meaningless due to the discrepancies in program size. For example, I interviewed at a place that takes 2 prelims. It was borderline not worth going to just due to the probability.

Not true. The program most likely interviews no more than necessary to fill the positions. It has no reason to waste everyone's time. If they want to rank 18 people for 2 slots, it's the same as a program that interviews 90 people for 10 slots.
 
Mathematically that makes sense, but it still felt like a bit of a waste. I went because I had rotated there on rotation so figured it was a bit of a home program (this program was not jefferson).
 
I know someone from my school last year that match rads but had to scramble prelim surgery. I think he applied to a narrow geographic region for prelim medicine programs though.

What's the lowest you've heard of anyone going on their radiology rank list?

Last year I know someone from my school who got his 5th choice.
