Ok I really liked this program but I found out through people that this program gives second looks to applicants that they like, apparently I did not get one. I am going for FM and am a DO.

Question is should I even rank this program? They said it was a tough year lots of good applicants.

If you know a program is giving selective second looks and you did not receive one, would you or would you not rank the program?

I have sent thank you emails to all the interviewers and PC.

Thanks for answering.

At this point in time everone should really know how the match works. Here goes. You like a program and rank it first. They can a) Love you, and rank you high enough to match = you match there b) Decide that they dont want you under any circumstances and not rank you at all = you dont match there c) rank you but also rank other candidates higher than you. If those other candidates decide to go somewhere else (i.e rank other programs higher) then you will match there. If they like the program and also rank it high, you dont match there. As you can see there is ABSOLUTELY no downside to ranking in the order of YOUR preferances. Worst case scenario you dont match at that program, but if you dont rank them you definately wont match there. Also ranking them high IN NO WAY impacts your chances at programs lower down on your list.

These questions come up because no one wants to match lower on their list. Im sure people want to be able to say that they matched at their number 1, especially if their # 1-3 are pretty equal in their book. Along the same line of thinking, maybe some dont want to "waste" the "I'm ranking you number 1" email on a program they have no shot at, particularly when these emails can potentially give you boost.

Seriously ! After four years of med school and an immense amount of debt and this is how you choose a residency ? If it is so important just tell people that you matched at your number 1. No one will know but you :meanie:

The same happened to me. my number 1 program, sent 2nd look invitation to selected applicants that they are planning to rank. Unfortunately I wasn't invited. Now I am confused should I rank it number 1 or not.

As has been said about 17000 times this application season by now, it should NOT MATTER whether you think a program likes you or not. The match algorithm favors the applicant--you are guaranteed to match at the program that you rank highest that also ranks you high enough to match. You could rank 15 programs that you didn't even interview at as spots 1-15 if you like, and you will not in any way decrease your chances of being accepted at the programs lower on your list.

I guarantee that not all the people who were invited plan to attend the second look. I also guarantee that not all the applicants invited to a second look plan to rank that program first. Don't let how you think you will be ranked affect how you rank the programs. Don't get caught up in the "I matched at my first choice" bragging rights. Sure, you may not get your first choice. Decide to be happy whereever you end up, and never tell the program they weren't first on your list!
