I don't think he was talking about the neccesary hours, but rather the 'best' # of hours for each of the categories. They're all important, one way or another, its just a matter of debate how many hours each is needed for each category to be 'the best'.

I don't even know the difference. My assisting was shadowing and my shadowing was volunteering.

If you do actual "in the mouth" assisting then it beats shadowing anyday cause you are actually doing something. I've done actual assisting for 4 months now and I'd be bored out of my mind if I were to watch a dentist fill a cavity.
