Ranked for prelim and categorical

hello all. IMG here. Following the forums for some time now. I applied to categorical and preliminary surgery programs, some even in the same hospital/program. one interview i attended the PD told me I am being ranked for both prelim and categorical. i thought it was rather odd. should i go ahead and rank both on my primary list as well? i would prefer the categorical position. insight is greatly appreciated

If they ranked you categorical, you'd be a fool not to rank them. What's another $10 or whatever that extra program costs

to clarify, by applying for both positons i essentially clicked the categorical and prelim boxes and i only paid for 1 application. This program will be ranking me on their categorical rank list as well as the preliminary rank list. could that mean I get ranked higher on one list and lower on the other? vice versa. Im not too sure...

Doesn't matter where they rank you. If you rank categorical higher on your list, if you are at a ranking where you will match, then you match. There is no way to trick, fool, game, play, or otherwise cheat the match. Rank what you want and don't over think or obsess about

Rank your categoricals in order of desirability, then rank your prelims below them in order of desirability. Don't overthink it.
