ranked vs. non-ranked waitlist

Is anyone familiar with the way that a ranked waitlist works? If you're initially ranked high on the list, does your ranking change over time? I would imagine that it is continually changing.

If a school uses a non-ranked waitlist, how do they decide who to pull from the list?

Has anyone heard of a list that takes into account the time at which you were added to the list?

Probably for a non-ranked waitlist they look at people who kept in touch with the adcoms through letters of interest/intent, extra recs, update letters, etc. It makes sense that they would have an affinity for the people who are proactive.

I am currently on a ranked waitlist. I don't know if this how all of them work, but this is how this school's does: All candidates are given a numerical score. Then after being placed on the waitlist, they are ranked according to theeir numerical score. Since the waitlist is always growing, your ranking tier may change depending on how many people are placed above or below you. The entire waitlist will then only be formed at the end of the interview season.
