ranking advanced vs categorical

I wasn't able to find this information on the NRMP site so I was hoping someone will be able to help on SDN...

Say you're ranking:
1) Program A (advanced) + Prelim 1 or Prelim 2
2) Program A (categorical)

If you match into Program A (advanced) but DON'T match into either Prelim 1 or 2, will you have to scramble for a Prelim spot or will you be able to fall into Program A (categorical)? From my understanding, the supplemental list is a completely separate match so it won't look back on your primary list. Is there a way to rank your list so that if you don't get the Prelim spots, you will be able to go into Program A (categorical)? Thanks so much for your help!

from what i recall, i don't think there's a way to order your rank list to give you that safety net. i think if you want to rank the advanced program ahead of the categorical, then you have to bite the bullet and rank enough prelim programs to match, otherwise you may have to scramble. anyone else?

Pretty sure that your matching into the advanced spot is contingent upon you matching into the prelims, if you don't match your prelims then the NRMP will move down your list to try to match you to the categorical. If you realy want the advanced then re-rank it with out the supplemental list and good luck scrambling.

I had this same question and asked my dean of students. Once you are matched on the primary ROL, you are stuck with that program. The algorithm will try to match you into one of the prelims on the corresponding supplemental list, but if it can't, you will end up scrambling for prelim. You'll get a message on Monday saying, "Congratulations! You matched into an advanced position!" instead of "Congratulations! You matched!".

It sucks if you want to do your prelim somewhere else but would rather do the prelim attached to the categorical program as an alternative to scrambling. One way to get around this is to rank the categorical's prelim separately on your supplemental list, but this only works if you applied to that program separately and were interviewed.

after seeking info on this question from my dean, med school, and finally the NRMP themselves (on hold forever, jerks!) -- the last post is correct, absolutely correct.

the ROL you submit for each spot on your primary rank list you submit is secondary/contingent upon where your primary match occurs. the primary match occurs first, and is set in stone. then the NRMP does a second wave of matching for your intern year, using ONLY the secdonary ROL that you assign to that primary match... this is why you have to submit a separate secondary ROL for each advanced position on your primary ROL.

this sucks doesn't it? I only have 2 prelims (transitionals) to rank. I am scared of doing surgery in Iowa next year, so I don't know if I should take into account whether my programs are 4 year or 3 year when ranking them.
