So how exactly important is class rank compared to USMLE score?

I mean, for my school at least, there is not necessarily a strong correlation between doing well in classes and doing well on the USMLE, and it makes me wonder about the "glorified" AOA status. I could understand if two candidates for a residency spot had the same USMLE score and different grades of course the spot would go to the higher GPA/rank, but other than that, I would think LORs and Board scores trump class rank.

Forgive me if there has already been a similar topic addressing this.

The Steps are five million times more important than pre-clinical grades.

Truf.

It depends on the specialty and program - look at Charting the outcomes of the match for a rough idea.

I will say that for one ortho program I rotated at, almost all of the residents were AOA (not exclusively, but close).

At my school, 1/3 of your class rank is your step score. So yeah...that beast is ultra-important.
