I'm about to finalize my ROL and was hoping someone had some input on the NYC programs specifically: Columbia, Cornell, Sinai, NYU, and Einstein. I've seen some threads in the past but would love an updated take on the reputations of these programs. Also, I am interested in dermpath so anything regarding the relative strength of dermpath at these places would be very helpful!

Thanks!

You really should ask 0007 what he/she thinks about mt. sinai. he/she may have some thoughts!!

I liked Columbia, they have a lot resources there, prominent figures in the field. CP is pretty good there but call might be heavier than other programs. Rotated there during medical school and loved the CP though. Also they have snacks on friday after work in the resident's room... location is kinda sketchy but it's nice if you are from jersey (can take the george washington since next to it).

NYU and Einstein were also nice programs. One thing I liked about NYU is that in your first year you are at Bellevue so you have exposure to everything, and you learn to do frozens too (my program stalls frozens until second year). Einstein is also good program - in hindsight would have ranked it 1 or 2. The director is nice, they get paid the highest, subsidized housing, good number of fellowships etc.

rotated at Columbia - people were nice, CP is very good, but the place felt very disorganized. i'm also very diagnostically oriented and wasn't impressed by the AP/surg path. the location is also horrible. i don't think there's an in-house dermpath fellowship so you'd prob be vying for the one at memorial

NYU - did not like my interview day. thought it was a very lackluster place and residents made it clear that if you care about CP at all, you should not go there

Cornell - loved the program and the residents. awesome subsidized housing. they seem to have a good track record of sending residents over to memorial for fellowships, including dermpath so i think this one would be a good bet

when i talk to older attendings, they all seem to think that Columbia is the best/most reputable program in NYC but i honestly don't understand why based on my rotation there. the only impressive things at Columbia, aside from CP, were neuropath, med renal, and med liver. maybe things have changed a lot. i personally thought Cornell was the most impressive overall

I am one of the chief residents at Einstein... When I applied for residency four years ago I only interviewed and Einstein and Sinai of the NYC programs (was applying from out of state), and between those two I think the choice is obvious, unless Sinai has changed significantly in the interim... let me know if you have any questions!

I'm friends with someone who started residency at Cornell, but after just one year they left and completed residency elsewhere.

My friend has told me many stories of that year, but in general they tell me it's a good program where you would learn a ton, and would be in a great position career-wise (fellowships, resume boost, connections, etc.).

So why did they leave? Quite simply, there was so much work that they couldn't study. My friend is a very hard worker, so I think this is quite a statement coming from them.

Cornell residents are definitely put to work, and often have long hours. Now, that's not necessarily bad, and again they tell me it was quite the learning experience. But I suppose it depends on what your goals are. If the benefits going to Cornell would provide you are woth 14-16+ hour days with zero time to read, then go for it.

But my friend is not terribly interested in developing a big career, becoming chair of a department someday, and so on. So for them, it made more sense to save their sanity and complete their education elsewhere...someplace they would actually have time to read. 😛

I've tried to relate my friend's statements here plainly, without adding any of my own embellishment. But still, keep in mind this is second-hand information.

Sinai HAS changed significantly since.
The program was doomed in 2008-2010, but with completely new leadership (Chair, Vice Chairs, PD)
and significant monetary investment it is definitely on the up and up. I think very soon it will be part
of the best 3 programs in NYC (with Cornell and Columbia).

Actually, the Chair is not a pathologist and has serious racism sexism issues. The PD has a record of problems. I would go here if you are white, male, and the right religion because they literally hate you, unless you are related to someone or the other or something else. Not a good place.

I have never worked at Mr. Sinai so I don't know, but come on....Really?

Warned - intent to inflame
I have never worked at Mr. Sinai so I don't know, but come on....Really?

They attack minorities and blame minorities as a rule for anything and everything, even fabrication of entire events to accuse and malign an individual minority (manansala v. Mt sinai medical center). It seems that I am right more and more about them and their corruption as well.

I can't even post on this forum cause you people hate the 1st amendment. Long live free speech and democracy. Support whistleblowers.

OK man, that's enough. You need to move on.

You are one of the many sycophants and lackeys for the status quo that want to continue the attack on minority pathologists and residents. You can't randomly attack and censor me for expressing my opinions and providing input about various matters.

It's not random. Nor is it "various matters." It's a single matter. We receive more complaints in this forum about your posts (and from many many different people) than any other person's posts. I have no idea who you are nor do I have any association or connection at all with the program you malign. I have no clue why you think this has anything to do with being a minority.

The facts are facts about how a single program is run and it's leadership, if I didn't know what I do know and my experiences, I wouldn't have anything to say. Racism is a reality in medicine and especially, pathology. If you really don't think that's true, you haven't talked to minority physicians about their experiences. Basically accusations are easily thrown around without regard for standard practice of pathology to malign minority docs. I understand that there are people who support this program and likely because they have been given all sorts of passes to allow them to succeed for being the right color, race and gender, not because they are more qualified or more intelligent or more professional or better in any tangible way. I was told of how numerous minorities were mistreated there by certain 'privileged' people but no consequences to the usual "caucasian" doc for misconduct. I guess they want to groom these people to be leadership. They then vilify the minority woman for various problems that they have been having for 10-15 years. This sort of conduct in medicine is malicious and hateful, something that I have never experienced in my entire life until I worked there, systematic attack and harassment, I guess reserve captaining for certain person taught him how to crap on vulnerable minorities, if nothing else. Apparently, it's a valuable skill among others in pathology because he had been hired at two different institutions. I guess you can look forward to seeing him campaign at whatever local train station for an even cheaper parking pass cause he is too cheap to pay 5$ a day when he did show up to work. WTF? Is it just him and Fallon? So, I didn't come up with anything new, this is journalism a la NYTIMES http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/02/nyregion/nyregionspecial2/04cteye.html?pagewanted=print&_r=0.

Also, this was what I was told by higher ups who worked(s) there and verified cause apparently its routine practice for this organization to attack attack attack minorities and women, see Manansala v Mt Sinai Hospital or Huang v. Mt Sinai Hospital, and many more that you don't know about. Shame on them and shame on anyone who has anything derisive to say to me on this matter.

As for the new hires such as the new chair or PD, nothing has changed with the new people, they are even worse and even less competent but that's how this org operates. As for cronies, Lento Fallon Pessin etc are at other institutions in or about NYC such as NYMC and Memorial Sloan, very scary. Given my knowledge of them and their true nature, it's horrifying to me that anyone, Caucasian or not, would be subjected to their shenanigans of rottenness and hate.

The facts are facts...

Of which, you have related zero. If there are legit problems with Sinai, or Sloan, or wherever, fine. "Whistleblow" away.

But state facts; give examples. From what I've seen, all you've done thus far is spew vague slander.

Better yet, don't. If someone has facts of misconduct, report them through the appropriate legal and professional channels. Don't spread hearsay and loaded opinions.

Agree with this. This is not a forum for these types of rumors and slander, or even specific complaints.

FYI, it's not hearsay or loaded opinions or rumors or slander, whatever that means to you but pathologists are not the brightest judge of such matters by a long shot. I would appreciate unlocking of the thread that was locked. This forum is a waste of time and I never had any time before to post on this crap forum.

I will assume by your petty conduct that you are an IMG who had bad board scores who wanted to "live the dream" of medicine and took whatever program he could get - namely some sinking-ship IMG-mill in New York. They then kicked you out for some reason and you've been holding a grudge ever since.

Either get over it or hire legal representation to challenge whatever they did. Coming here and anonymously bashing people makes you look stupid.

i don't get what medical schools or higher learning institutions some of you numbskulls attended because settling into comfortable stereotypes and xenophobic attacks seem the default and it's tired and lame on your part.

I am not going to unlock the thread. There is no purpose. You have said your piece and there is no point in continuing to rehash it. It may serve you a purpose to continue to vent and throw accusations out, but it doesn't really do anyone else any good. If you have nothing else original or productive to add I suggest you take it elsewhere.
