So this is getting a little ahead of the game here but wondering what people think.. I would like to stay in a certain region. But are there certain programs where the name and program are prestigious enough that that should take precedence when making a rank list? Specifically, programs like Denver or Cook County or Boston Medical Center?

Yeah, it said "premed" under your pic when I looked at it on my computer. Being a 4th year makes sooooo much more sense.

Sorry I don't have an answer to the actual question, the premed thing threw me off. Good luck this year!

In general, no. If you're trying to get a job in academics when you're done, then having an academic residency program can be helpful. That said, you seem to be going towards the other end of the spectrum with more county style programs. As such, it probably won't matter much. If anything, you may be better served by doing residency in the area where you want to live as an attending as residency will allow you to build connections and learn about the various jobs in the area which can otherwise be difficult when you're coming from a distance off.

The only thing that should take preference on your rank list are your own preferences.

Thankfully, EM is a field where the "name value" of your residency generally is meaningless (job demand is very high, and generally people aren't looking for fellowship positions). Go where you'll be happy and successful as a resident. Certain programs are more "well known" because they produce more academics and leaders within the field. If that is a career priority of yours, then certainly give that consideration. But I think you're still better off going someplace where you get along with the residents and residency leadership; that will he the greatest boon for your career.

Page 49 of the PDF gives an ALL FIELDS answer to this question. I don't know if there are EM specific data out there. For my n = 1 anecdote, everyone in my graduating class who applied to EM matched in the top 5 on their list (I know because we all shared our rank lists, where we applied, where we were accepted, and our step 1, step 2 scores with all of the MS3s at the end of our 4th year). Everyone matched. Your mileage my vary.

EMRA sent out an email blast after match day last year and somewhere around 50% match at their number 1
