O.k. I have a stupid question.

When we rank, PLEASE tell me that we have a separate rank for Transitional year programs, no?

That way, we don't break our contiguous rankings etc. etc.

I have to think this is the case, but not sure.

Anyone?

my understanding is that for each advanced program ranked there is a separate rank list sort of attached to the program that represents your TY/prelim rank order. You have to submit the supplementary list to each advance spot you are ranking. That way allows you to adjust the order of your prelims based on location. I.e. if you ranked to the advanced Colorado program you may want to rank Colorado prelims above ones in another state. This way it allows you to try to set up it up based on how your preference on prelims may change based on where you match. If you are doing the 100% TY route and don't care about moving twice and have the same preference no matter what categorical you match into - then you'd put the same list attached to each advance spot that you rank.

anyhoo, that's how a PD explained it to me....complicated though!!

The following is an example of anesthesia programs and their corresponding prelim or transitionals (also throwing in an example of programs with both advanced and categorical spots)

Rank 1 - Program A categorical

Rank 2 - Program A advanced
-- program a transitional
-- program b transitional
-- program c prelim

Rank 3 - Program B categorical

Rank 4 - Program C advanced
-- program c prelim
-- program a transitional

..............

Rank 20 - Program a transitional
Rank 21 - Program b transitional

For each advanced program you get a corresponding supplement list. This list can be changed for each advanced program if you choose to do so (see rank 2 vs rank 4). The last example is something that people should keep in mind. If they don't match at any anesthesia program, they can at least secure their 1st year spot by adding the prelim and transitional programs at the end. If you dont add prelim or transitional programs at the end of your primary list, the match algorithm will assume you would rather go unmatched.

This is correct... don't worry - you'll get to create your match list just the way you want it.
