rapid review vs. brs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Goljan wrote rapid review biochem, that's the other one of the rapid review series he wrote. That alone made me choose that. I've also noticed it covers a fair amount of molecular.

RR Path>>> BRS Path. Both are actually solid; I used both. However, RR goes over not just path, but integrates a lot of concepts and pathophysiology. Moreover, RR has a lot of clinical integrations that will serve you well on rotations and step 2. You will be so much better off because of it. If you are short on time, I would go with BRS. I can pretty much bet that those who used and memorized RR, instead of BRS, regardless of the step score, have much more wide knowledge base for the rotations and should do better.

Micro, I would not use RR. Micro Made Ridiculously Simple is simply the best! MMRS + FA = covered 95%+ of what they usually test.

For Pharm, use lipincott and its note cards

Lippincott's's for biochem seems popular here.
Lippincotts biochem is good, but its too stinking long for a review book. I would probably go with RR biochem for a review book.

I think the reason the M3s love em here is because everyone used it for biochem first year, and so just used the diagrams for review.

biochem- for the class, I'd use lippincott

for the boards, I'd use BRS

Rapid Review's focus in biochem is weird- I know it was coauthored by Goljan, but i don't trust it. too much nutrition and garbage that isn't covered much on Step 1.

Is the material covered on Step 1 similar to what's covered on the biochem shelf exam? That's what I'm trying to get ready for (Shelf is in Feb, while step 1 isn't for another year and a half; one thing at a time 🙂)

I used the BRS biochem and I got a 900 on the shelf. It is sufficient. And yes, the material on Step 1 is similar. Thats kinda the point of the shelf these days it seems like.

If you only have the biochem shelf in that week, you might consider using lipincott, but idk- seems like too much. Also, don't go out and buy a ton of books, if you already have RR that should be fine.

What about for neuroscience? BRS, RR or any other ideas?

It is the only thing we have that week, but the exam is on a Tuesday. And it's right in the middle of 5 straight weeks of exams (one exam per week, but I still anticipate it being tiring)

Thanks for your help! I'm almost through RR, so I'll probably just finish that up during break and then switch to BRS when I get back to school. 🙂

I used Lippincotts too and I LOVED IT. But I don't think I'd use it to review the whole subject because it would take way too long (and I still wouldn't be able to remember everything). I'd go with BRS/Goljan. Both are good.

hey BOdonoid, interesting signature you got there... High step 1 score will not land you a hot girlfriend. You have to learn to play 'The Game' or get a 'love potion 9', haha
