One of my professor has a twisted sense of humor. We cuss at each other periodically and always give each other backhanded compliments, never straight forward ones. Has anyone had a similar with a relationship with a professor? Did you ask them for a letter? I'm just asking out of curiosity. I absolutely love my professor so they are going to be one of my letter writers.

If anyone has examples of the professor's personality, please post it. We could use a laugh.

Yes. I had a few drinks with one of my professors after helping her with construction on her house. To say that she had a sailor's mouth outside of university would be an understatement... She wrote me my best letter of recommendation.
 
I mean, as long as that professor can write a straight-forward amazing recommendation letter, not a backhanded one...why not?
 
They wouldn't do that. Real friends say nice things behind your back and bad things to your face. I know they're not friends, but it was the closest term I know of.

So do I. But I'm a pretty upbeat and jovial person and I interact with my professors a lot. I can be in a class of 500 and I would still stand out.
 
I played intramural basketball with one of my biology professors. He dunked on a kid mid-game. It was glorious. He also talked so much smack to the opposition haha. Great prof and even better guy.

We once had a Muslim person in my class. The fire alarm went off, they looked at that person with a straight face asking "WHAT DID YOU DO!?"
 
Two of my professors got me liquor post-MCAT, another got me a set of notebooks I like. I've gotten dinner with them and talked about personal things. Small schools are fun.
 
Professor mentioned above emailed me back after letting her know I got in (I didn't mention which school but she knows I only applied in the US):


"Nice! Which island? I've always wanted to vacation in the caribbean!

But seriously which school?"

Professor once told me to say "d**k" in class, so I did. Then said "Louder!" so I did. Then said, "With feeling!" so I looked dead at my professor with a straight face and said "D**K!"

Sounds very unprofessional, and like a low-tier undergraduate institution.
 
The guy is very twisted. That's all I'll say. I'm even more amazed by the fact he's tenured. I'm still trying to figure out how that was even possible.

He teaches at NYU. No further info. You decide if that's low-tier or not. He's especially twisted with people he's known for years. I'm one of them.

That guy defies common sense and logic. But here's another:

One time he replied to me in his native language and I was confused. He replied again in his native language and I said "Can you speak English?" and he said "Absolutely! F**k you!"

Actually no. The class was UD elective and just about everyone knows his humor. The only people taking that class would be the ones who like him. I think that's another reason he was very cut throat in that class.
 
As fun as this has been to read, i'm not sure why you posted it to begin with. You're describing a pretty standard brolationship.

The point is that I figure some of these stories could be funny because you don't see that kind of relationship in many student-teacher relationships. Do you have any for us? Bombs away.

No, the others told us their stories, so I decided to do it too. I was also wondering if anyone else would hesitate to ask a professor like this for a letter because TBH, I had a little bit if doubt that was completely extinguished by this.

That is true. But that was another way of me saying unprofessional or ghetto. But he said he goes to NYU. So I don't know what to say. Don't you think I already know this? I've been on here for years now.

I've been on here for 2+ years and have yet to see an ADCOM member say that undergrad university factors into decision. I would be happy to find and post multiple threads where they've said the opposite if you'd like. I'll let AAMC refute your point in the meantime. On page 2 you won't see "undergraduate institute" anywhere on selection criteria.

Bruh. Of course it matters. Haven't you seen the infographic that's been posted on here a million times where "undergraduate selectivity" is of high importance to private schools and of low importance (but still important) to public schools?
Anecdotally, at all my higher end interviews, the vast majority of kids are from top institutions. I always feel like i'm the token diversity slot with my previously unheard of undergrad.

I've actually never seen that. Maybe I have some sort of bias since I didn't apply to any upper tier medical schools haha
 
So I'm guessing that end note means that it only matters if you're at a top 20 undergrad.

I guess it makes sense secondaries are weighted less heavily. We don't have nearly as much time to plan them out. Even if you looked them up online, it's still 2-3 pages per school.
 
I had a supervisor at my school, also a dean, who would continually make jokes about proctology and my hands whenever med school and I got brought up....
Add in the standard dirty jokes, **** talking other people and profanity and you have an interesting relationship

Nevertheless, they did an admirable job writing my letter. Exactly what I imagined/wanted
