FMG in a mediocre IM program doing PGY3 now.Planning to apply for cards this year. No card fellowship available in the IM program.
1) First author for the abstract accepted in TCT 2006.
2) First author for the abstract accepted in SCAI 2006
3) Second author in 2 abstracts accepted in AHA 2006 for oral presentation.
Hoping to get few abstracts in next ACC.

4) 1 case report published in a heavy weight Card journal as first author.
5) 4th author in a basic science article published in a lousy journal.
6) 1 case series in process.
7) 2 publications expected in the recent future as one primary author and 1 secondary author in JACC or minimum AJC.
8) Recieved best resident award last year.
Expected to get good LORs from PD and Cardiologists.

I would rate "you" as fair. There are a lot of people with years more work then this. Most people I know that are FMG's where working in this field in their own country prior to coming to US and or have a PhD. You have a chance, but honestly slim.

Endodoc's response seems a little unfair.

No doubt you would be better served if you trained in a major academic program. No doubt your cause would be served better by a strong 1st author publication involving original research. Basic science is particularly valued by many academic programs. That said, there are a number of terrific academic and clinical programs throughout the country. You are clearly a hard worker with solid clinical training, and I suspect that you would take advantage of every opportunity to learn clinical cardiology wherever you go. Apply broadly and be flexible. Best of luck.

Thank you very much for the reply endodoc and blutarski. That meant lot to me. Can somemore people give the input. I am still deciding where to apply?

I would not say I was unfair, sometimes people need to hear truth and not have smoke blown up their ass. Many places do that and will tell the apps that they hav a chance in order to get some extra cash through ERAS.

I have seen this many times with people applying to cards and there is no doubt that he/she has a chance, but one must think outside the box when looking at the pool.
