You can't possibly "rate" a match list. Those matches could represent a student's 1st choice, 2nd choice, 5th choice, or whatever. A school could push their students to "aim low," thus ensuring a higher percentage of matching with a first choice. Or a school could push their students to "aim high," which could lead to lower choices, but at least giving it a shot. It is impossible to guage anything from a rank list.

This is obviously Northwestern's match list 🙂

heh.... smartass

I don't know why people care about the match list...if you are a good student, you'll do fine wherever. There are some advantages...if you must go to mass gen then go to harvard or something. To me, that match list is nothing. But of course, UCIrvine's match list looks much more impressive to me b/c everyone matches in Cali.

It's a wonderful match list!

This is obviously Northwestern's match list 🙂 •••••DANG ur an anthesiologist at pritzker....WOWZIE....and ur reply was so kewl..I never thought about it that way!? but come on, schools really cant FORCE u to aim low, to get a higher match list, can they?!

ehem....can u give some tips on med school to me? I'm kind of thinking about anthesiology...but I heard u get a lot of lawsuits is that true?

I personally give this match list a 54.6.

personally, i'm not that impressed with it.
it's all right.

Now that I had a good look at it, it's not that great. I think I would consider SC's better. They had more big name hospitals on their list, but also more lessnamed hospitals.

This is definitely not what I expected from NU's matchlist. No offense, but for a school with a reputation of Northwestern's, I expected a lot more. Only 1 Derm and 3 Rads matches? I didn't see any Optho or ENT matches. Seems like Ortho is the only competitive specialty they were representin' in. Weird.

Northwestern's list improved this year. The 2002 list can be found here: http://www.infoplex.nwu.edu/class/alumni/match/2002match.html They have 12 people in Radiology, 12 in Ortho, 6 in Optho, 3 in ENT, 3 in derm, etc. Not bad. I have talked to a few NU students who say that many of the students just aren't interested in dermatology. I think the EM match is especially impressive, but you have to know that some of the best programs in EM (like Maricopa or Hennepin) don't necessarily have big school names attached.

This reply is for WatchaMaCallit-

A school can't necessarily "force" you into doing anything when it comes to making your final rank list. However, when you seek the advice of your Dean and/or Advisor, some may wrongfully either imply or tell you not to aim high because (a) you might end up disappointed (b) by "ensuring" your 1st choice, you will help them in the "how many of our students got their 1st choice" statistic they like to brag about to interested pre-meds. My school did not. They seem to have encouraged everyone to put their dream programs at the top. As a result, some may have gotten even their 4th choice. But, at least they gave it a shot. Just my two cents.

Also, the distribution of particular specialties on a particular match list does not in anyway reflect on the how good a particular medical school does in the match. It simply reflects the interests of those members of that graduating class. For example, if you only see 1 person going into Dermatology, the only conclusion that you can reliably make is that _one_ person was interested in Derm. You cannot deduce that 15 people wanted it and were rejected.

This is why looking at match lists is a poor way of comparing medical schools, simply because the matches represent the specialties, locations, and hospitals that the students themselves wanted. Not everyone wants to go to Harvard, so just because it ain't on some random medical school's list does not mean that you couldn't go there.

I agree, the 2002 match list is stronger than the previous year.

The match list of a university can give you an IDEA of how good a school is, but it shouldn't be the primary criteria to evaluate a medical school.
Every class is going to be different, each year will vary in talent, effort, board scores, and most importantly (what specialty they desire to pursue).
Perhaps looking at SEVERAL years of a schools match list will give a better idea of how a school does in the match.
Northwestern is a GREAT school, don't second guess that fact because you didn't see alot of matches in a particular specialty.
And even then, matching 12 in ortho in one year is a tremendous feat,... i'd say thats several times more than most schools. This years match was amazingly good at NUMS.
Ultimately, it's what you make out of your education thats going to matter. Who cares where your classmates go, care about where YOU go.

Hope to see you at NUMS, sam.

here u go mister sami 😀

I'll agree that NU's 2002 Match List is much stronger than the one posted on this thread. It's funny, coz I clicked on that link, and it turns out that I found a guy I actually know on the 2002 match list. I forgot he went to NU for med school. I have no doubt NU is a great school, I just found it weird that last year's match list didn't seem as strong as the school does. Match lists definitely vary from year to year. I know Miami's match list from a few years back had 8, yes 8 people, match into DERM! Of course, like others have stated, the variation is prolly moreso due to the interests of the class than anything else.
