So... my first attempt at college? Abysmal failure. Abysmal.

I took some time off. Went back. Advisor went into hysterics when I expressed an interest in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. He may or may not have implied that I was delusional... and I may or may not have snuck off and had a veritable nervous breakdown in the bathroom down the hallway. But I digress.

This morning?

I got my first interview invite! :soexcited:

No, it's not an acceptance... but it's a start. And if I do manage to get in?
I am so mailing that dude a copy of my acceptance letter. :meanie:
Congratulations! You deserve a chance! Good luck to you!!!!

That's awesome!! :clap::clap:

I also had a rough start to college life, and I got similar comments from my advisor, so I feel ya. But here we are, with interviews!!! I got a rejection from MN (I saw on the interview thread that you got your interview there), but couldn't be happier about my interviews with Kansas and Texas A&M! Yay for us!!!! 😀

Now go rock that interview!!

I got a new netbook!:soexcited:My regular laptop has been singing its swan song for some time now. I needed this to tie me off until I get into vet school and need a serious, grown-up computer. Until then, this is cute, fun, and totally functional. Yay!

major rave: Edinburgh's reception is on Feb 3rd. Not only is that awesome, but its my dad's birthday, and my boyfriend's birthday as well. How will we be celebrating? Going to the reception together... in NYC. He got in as well. This happened a little while ago, news of this that is, but I am just getting so excited. So after the lovely reception and meeting potential classmates for next year together, we will go out and celebrate with a nice dinner perhaps in the city for his birthday. :hardy:

EDIT: Happy Birthday to all those above (that's what inspired me to rave about his birthday in the first place...). My birthday will be the day before RVC's interview, yikes

AND for my RAVE: I am very excited to be called off the 'B' list from Kansas but what's even better than that??? scb44f (who I haven't seen since our VIDA trip...) is driving down and picking me up from the airport and coming WITH ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 😍 yay for friends! 🙂

I can't wait to see you!!

Also, congrats Cautionary Tail! That is awesome!

So I showed up at the barn tonight for my first Eq Team lesson of the quarter, and I looked at the horse assignments and about fell over. I was assigned a horse who I felt like was above my level and I was really nervous about riding him. He's a nice horse but he's ginormous and very quick and headstrong. :scared:

I went up to my trainer and told her I wasn't sure if I would be comfortable riding him and she said that she could come down and see if she had another horse for me to ride but that she thought I'd be fine. I could tell she was disappointed that I was wimping out so I took a deep breath and told her I'd give him a try.

And I did SO WELL. Not that it wasn't hard-it was SO hard. He's physically very difficult to ride and by the end of the lesson I was sweaty and my legs were shaking and I could hardly breathe but it's always exhilarating to step outside your comfort zone and accomplish something you thought you couldn't.

So there's my rave for the day 😀

I am having such an amazingly awesome time at my internship. I was in GP for the first three days, intermediate care/surgery for the fourth day, and today I was in critical care/surgery. Saw a double elbow arthroscopy and a front limb amputation on a dog with osteosarcoma. Tomorrow I'm in the ER, Monday I'm in oncology/surgery, Tuesday is opthalmology, Wednesday is behavior and physical rehab, Thursday is internal medicine, and Friday is radiation therapy.

I'm a little bummed that I can't hang out with the neurologist, but I'm super excited about everything else!!!!

I almost spun/slid off of the on-ramp to I-35 south while coming home from visiting my little sister. I'm not quite sure what happened... I was inching down the ramp at maybe 15mph and the road looked clear, so I'm thinking I hit ice; all I know is suddenly I was sliding sideways and then my car was on the side of the ramp facing the wrong way. I have absolutely no idea how I stopped myself from tumbling off of it.

So, this is a rave because I did not wreck my car and made it home in one piece!

That sounds incredible! Very jealous!

MY THESIS IS WORKING!

I extracted DNA from my samples... saw some very faint streaks on the gel... so I moved on to DNA amplification without even knowing if I had DNA or not. The first primer set failed... but the second set... was a SUCCESS. YAY :soexcited:

I bought myself a smartpen this Christmas.. my special dot paper notebooks came last night. I can't wait to start using it. It's so cool!

I'm in Illinois right now celebrating the Inauguration of the Governor!!! It's all incredibly exciting since he is a part of our family and everyone is so proud of him. Being in Springfield is very inspiring and although it is a tad bit cold outside, it is beautiful. Lincoln stuff is EVERYWHERE. Tomorrow is the ceremony and tomorrow night is the Ball. Everything is so fancy and wonderful...I don't know how I'll go back to my regular life after this. 😛

Ooh! That's special!

So this is a real bump, not a fake one....

Yesterday was an unofficial first day, aka day 1.1, of Couch to 5k since my SO wanted to help me start. So we went and did it. Except I had to stop halfway through. Why is this a rave? My SO gave me some encouragement and I actually finished. This may not sound too bad if you know what the first day's routine of the program is, but I seriously haven't worked out in just over a year. I was out of shape then...

Today was day 1.2, the official start of Couch to 5k, and I did what I struggled to do yesterday without stopping in the middle. Let's just say I have a little confidence in myself today 🙂

Congrats! I love the title 'Couch to 5K'! You have a very supporting SO 🙂

Rave: Snow day on first day of spring classes! Organic Chem will just have to wait until Wednesday. Haha! Forecasted to snow 8-10 inches. While I usually hate snow...when it cancels ochem, I'm all for it

Thanks!

That sounds like a good start to the semester!

Congrats on completing the first two days of C25K! I actually re-started it yesterday! I've already done it once and it's only been a couple months since I've run so I started yesterday with W2D1. I want to run a couple of 5Ks in the spring and then possibly get up to 10K this summer.

What exactly is this?

Well, I kinda get that you have x amount of time to run a marathon... but is it like an actual program?

That website will show you the routine. Basically, you take steps toward jogging for long periods (compared to not jogging at all). It's nice because it's a written out, tried and true method, at least for a lot of people.

I'm a non-athlete, but really the biggest obstacle right now for me is to get my body conditioned to the feeling of not having oxygen. My SO likes to say that exercise is 98% mental and 2% physical, which may be a stretch, but I think that's why his encouragement helped. He kept telling me, "You can breathe, just do it, don't freak out, you're not tired, your body just isn't used to feeling this way."

Congrats to all the Couch-to-5k-ers! My friend and I did it a few years ago (well, she did it, and I tried... but I am impatient, so I progressed at my own pace, shin splints be damned ). I'm trying to get back into the running thing, too... last semester was definitely not buffness-friendly, haha.

Today's rave: My lap is presently being occupied by FAILCat* (*pseudonym- I'm not that mean 😉). He's very alert and coordinated today, and might be looking a teensy bit chunky.

He just jumped down to initiate play with the New Addition. SQUEE.

I was starting to get worried about having to leave him for interviewing purposes... if he keeps this up, maybe I can stop being so neurotic about it. Maybe. 😀

Spoke to admissions people at North Carolina and Florida today, and they're both okay with my not taking the second semester of orgo lab!!!! YAHOOOOOOO!!!!

ETA: Oooh. 501st post 😀

So. Jealous. 👍

😉 I meet the credit requirements for both schools (8) but did not take the second semester of lab. (Each lab at my university is 2 credits). They both said it was fine :-D

Classes canceled for the third day in a row. I love winter :meanie:

neighbor's dog barked for 3 hrs last night..while she was home! = -1
neighbor plowed AND salted the walk this morning before I left for work = +1

AND
more than likely going skiing this saturday!!

My new neighbors for this semester are awesome. I just had an awesome conversation with them about the club I am most passionate about, and they are genuinely interested!

I found out the other day that I'm the only interested applicant for a $400 bursary. I wasn't planning on applying because I needed a reference and I wasn't sure if that person knew me well enough to give me a good one. I asked and she was more than willing. She spoke to the woman who chooses the recipient and.. yeah... I've got it. It didn't keep me from spending the last hour describing my involvement with the organization and community involvement. The application was very vague (provide a handwritten letter outlining your involvement with the organization and community involvement) and only provided a teeny tiny space to discuss this. Well... I wrote two pages... and I feel really good about what I accomplished. A great deal of my community involvement involves helping animals. I started to tear up a little bit when I wrote about my VIDA trip and volunteering at a shelter... it made me feel so happy that I was able to help animals and their humans. Happy happy happy 😀

I just want to say how happy I am to live in a place where the weather is really nice. Mid 60's during the day and dropping into the low 40's at night. No snow to shovel, skid on, or slip and fall in. While I absolutely loved living in the snow for 4 years while I was in school; it is so nice to not have to go out to my car 40+ minutes before I have to leave to be somewhere to defrost it and dig it out of the snow.

Those getting buried in snow... Be safe and have fun when the storms clear! 🙂

While I don't like that my Chemical Process Safety professor is forcing us to work in groups on every homework assignment (each member has to physically sign each homework), I feel like I got into a pretty great group.

I went to the first lecture of Biotechnology in Film yesterday, and it's going to be amazing. Each week, we watch a movie, then discuss the main point of the film, and have an opinion "quiz" (i.e. talk to your neighbors, write stuff down, if you're there you should get full points). For instance, yesterday we watched WALL-E, and later in the semester we are watching things like Evolution, Young Frankenstein, Idiocracy, and Serenity. It's nice having someone nearer our age than the last person who taught the class because he revamped the list of movies for the semester to make it more enjoyable.

It's been a crazy week, but there was a GIANT bright spot:

I got a digital piano (a Casio Privia PX-130)! 😀 Even better? I remember how to play!! :soexcited:

It's a little slow because my eyes aren't used to reading base clef much less two lines at once; but it's coming along faster that I thought it would! I'm nearly back to where I was after 3 years of lessons and I'm thrilled!

A bit of thanks goes out to TT for bringing Ben Folds back to me. My plans were to buy a new drum kit; but when I went to the store something stopped me at the pianos. After putting my fingers on the keys of this bad boy, I was sold.

In other rave news: I saved a pig from a diabetic crisis on Tuesday. I walked into the room and the poor research tech had no idea what was going on. He had given her a dose of tranquilizer about an hour earlier and figured that's why she had been down for almost 1/2 hour! I asked if he had checked her sugar and he said it was 41 20 minutes earlier. However, it obviously had dropped again because she was shaking and unconscious. There was clearly NO time to find a vet, or any other help, so I went to work... I was really nervous; but when she opened her eyes and quietly oinked at me, it was one of the greatest moments of my career.

So I've been interning at the most awesome vet hospital on the east coast (yes, I'm biased 😉 ) for the past two weeks. I went into my supervisor's office to discuss my schedule for tomorrow, and she basically said that everyone had been going in to see her asking when I was coming to work there! I had discussed this with her previously, and didn't really think I fit any job descriptions, so I kind of put it on the back burner. However, I told her that I would fill out an application. I asked where I should bring it (meaning, should I bring it to Human Resources) and she said 'No, just give it to the GP tech supervisor!!' I was like 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 I am almost guaranteed at least a seasonal position in this awesome hospital and I am so lucky to have been offered this opportunity!

That's so exciting, NStars, both an awesome experience boost and them saying how much they love you! Congrats! 😀

As they say, credit where credit is due! Seriously, if I hadn't had Ben running through my head for the past couple of weeks I don't know if I would have even stopped at the keyboards.

And NStarz - Way to go!!

Thanks everyone! I'm still kind of in shock. They don't really have an opening for someone with my limited experience right now (they want all techs to have 2+ years of experience for GP and 4+ years (+certification) for emergency/critical care. But, she said if a veterinary assistant position opens up, I'm basically first on the list 😀

I just got confirmation today that I have a full time internship with the USDA/APHIS's Area Veterinarian-In-Charge in Cheyenne, Wyoming! I'll get more details on Tuesday, but he said that one of the projects I will be working on fixing a spreadsheet that has to do with auditing the 20 or so taxidermy shops in Wyoming with regards to imported animal artifacts (bones, stuffed heads, etc.) coming from countries with high rates of Foot and Mouth disease. There are some other projects that I could be working on, and I'll also get a chance to ride around in a government vehicle with some agents to help with field investigation type stuff.

I know that Cheyenne isn't known to be a top tourist destination, but I couldn't be more psyched to explore a different part of the country.
😀

Not quite a rave for myself but a rave for my boyfriend. He applied to PhD programs in different areas of psychology and hadn't heard anything yet. He was getting super antsy since I was getting interviews and rejections from vet schools. He got a call today from Pittsburgh for his very first interview!!! I'm so excited and thrilled for him! 😍

Nice! Congrats to him!!

My girlfriend and I went to the pet store today to get a dog bed and walked out with two mice, a habitat, food, bedding, treats, chew sticks, and nesting material. 😳

Just spent the day in Chicago with my sisters and brother in law at the museum of science and industry checking out a Jim Henson exhibit. Much needed random mini break from reality 🙂 I <3 my family

Despite my six rejections, I'm trying to look on the bright side for my last two schools. (Although pricing flights to PEI if I get an interview is actually more suited to the rant category. I may very well just drive the freaking 18 hours to save myself $1k+!) I got back from my trip to Texas yesterday and it was really nice to have my first "vacation" in years. I'm glad I opted not to take a winter class.

I'm planning to break out the pressure cooker I got for Christmas and make some awesome dinner. Tomorrow is MLK day and I don't think I need to be at work.

I'm really glad to be home.

👍👍👍 LOVE the Museum of Science and Industry. Love, Love, Love Jim Henson. 😍

On the way to posting in the "RANT HERE" section, I have a few things to RAVE about as well!

Dunno if anyone's watching the Golden Globes (I'm not) but Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper of the Big Bang Theory, one of my favorite TV shows) won his category- WOO:soexcited:

Also, today has been yet another day recently where I realized that I can't imagine doing anything besides pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. I had this realization in a major way last week out shadowing a LA vet and have been having glimpses ever since. As I research more and more about vet schools (particularly Tufts, my sole interview invite currently) and the field and learn stuff I never knew before, I'm so elated! 😍 For the first time in my life, I know that this is where I'm meant to be. So, even though I'm driving myself crazy about the application process right now, I truly believe in my heart, I wouldn't want to be doing anything else 😉:biglove:
