Veterinary School Application Advising Ad

Story time: Today while studying at Starbucks and feeling extremely frustrated with virology, the Dean came in to get his coffee. He saw us in our usual spot and came over to say hi like he usually does, but today we must have looked really beat down because he told us a wonderful story about how when he was a vet student he blew off every virology class. When he didn't have any notes to study off of for the final and only exam in the course, he bought a veterinary virology book and worked off of that, scraping by on the final with a 51. He ended it by telling us someone's argument recently for giving numerical grades instead of pass/fail for rotations: they said people want to know if they're hiring from the top of the class or the bottom. His response to them was that even the bottom of the class ends up being pretty successful 😉 Then he told us about how he just scraped by in histology being colorblind.

The cynic in me was going to end that message with what I did pretty much immediately after... But this is happy pre-vet land so I left that out. It was nice at least to give him the immediate relief to give the owners the time to contemplate and say goodbye and have a peaceful owner present euth with him being comfortable. Patient was on death's door so it was either tap or watch him code, so I got a quick verbal consent to tap and went with it (getting worse by the minute even in O2). I've been dr death as of late with probably half of my cases getting euthanized for one reason or another the past few shifts... +/- leaving AMA. So a heroic life saving measure was at least exciting even if only for an hour.

I get it, I really do. I definitely have dr. death weeks/months. I'm glad you made him feel better.

Yeah it sucks. The death toll is unusually high right now and it hasn't even been all that busy. Usually I euth like 2 per shift even when I see an upwards of 13 emergencies. It sucks when I'm euthanizing 3 out of 5-6 cases I see. F*** ATEs, CHFs, UO's, cancer, and IVDD. It sucks even more that the no money cases have the expensive but curable diseases, and the money is no object cases have incurable fatal illnesses.

Had two serious cases that turned out well in the end with extremely grateful owners, but that's about all I got going for me right now. It really sucks.

yeah. I'm sure its worse for emergencies. Sometimes the weeks just suck. Last months I euthanized 2 dogs in 1 family. both with neoplasia. It takes a toll on your mental health

In other news...I DIDN'T FAIL MY ECC EXAM!!! In fact, I kind of kicked butt on it (say what???). I am SOOOO excited.

Penny's masses came back lipomas!! Shocked and thrilled! They felt to "weird" for me to even put lipoma in my brain - I'm glad we opted to excisional biopsy a copy rather than just FNA or I never would have believed the results. Now we just need to get her over her UTI, but we'll totally take that instead of more badness 🙂

at least 7yo, maybe older. she had several mysterious masses pop up in the last couple of months (i noticed one, time elapsed, i noticed a bunch more) landing her a trip to the exotics department. happened to be their procedures day and they were like welllll...we could just lop a couple off...so glad we did that instead!! and yay for a 2 day histopath turn around time!
 
I just picked up my bird's ashes, which was sadder than I was expecting. But then I got home and saw the "paw" print they made for me, and I couldn't help but laugh because the impressions of her poor crippled feet looked so ridiculous. It so very perfectly captured her life as it was for the 2.5 years she lived with me and is making me feel so much better. It's the little things, sometimes, that make all the difference.

I got a second job today, at a customer service call center! I'm a little worried that I won't enjoy it and will wish I could have my free time back, or that it will end up conflicting with my vet assistant job. I'm also sad that it will take time away from the volunteer/shadowing opportunities I had lined up. But this is the rave thread, so I'm going to focus on being grateful for the opportunity to earn more money and save up for vet school. 🙂

Customer service experience is actually really good for you, especially getting comfortable talking on the phone with people. (Says the person who is currently sitting in a call center getting very sick of her job.)
 
I have to give Allo some credit. They go on and on about Anki and I appreciate the curiosity it gave me to try it out. A couple youtube tutorials later and I have gotten so much accomplished.

I haven't gotten into the algorithms for the learning process at all, but damn the cloze and image occlusion features make it 10x easier to create good flashcards.

Also, it took feedback from a prof on a simulated client interaction for me to realize that I'm an auditory learner. Here I always thought I was visual, but the lightbulb kinda lit up when I realized I always talk to myself when trying to memorize material.

I've been missing out on this stuff, but glad it's all coming together!
 
I started Anki the second week of vet school and I love it as well. 😀

It's wonderful for that tiny little minutia that I would never remember without spaced repetition. It's also great to keep old things fresh, which is fantastic since pretty much all of my exams (besides one class) are all cumulative.

Nice! I want to teach mine that because he's very good at just flopping over, but I haven't captured it yet. He did just learn paw though. I'm also trying to teach him take it but he doesn't quite get it yet.

It's so funny how they pick up some things so easily and yet some things are so difficult! haha

My puppy's the same way; flopping over is her favorite thing to do 🙂

I should stop by some time. But usually whenever I am at Penn I am in a rush to get out.

Spent the best 6 hours ever with 19 of my classmates today on a huge catamaran! We got to go snorkeling at the sculpture gardens here, then had all we could drink on the boat afterward. It was amazing, and I love Caribbean living 😀
 
BF is going to be able to come visit this weekend! Commence the awesome Halloween and birthday festivities!

That's still pretty cool 😀 My sister's is on Halloween, and her initials are HEL :laugh: Though we joke that it should have been me, since I'm the one who is super into horror and she hates it lol
