I'm learning blood draws next week 😱 Annnnnnddddd my shelter this week alone saved 75 dogs from euthanasia down south. EPIC 👍

So, does anyone else find that this applies to them? Cracked up the first time I ever saw this comic because I've done the exact same thing many, many times.

Pretty much sums me up.

lol. Totally me. I even do this at the zoo, where I get all excited if I see a feral cat on grounds. They get me every time.

The theater near my house is finally playing The King's Speech! So excited! But I don't know if I should go see it now and take the roughly two hours away from studying for my parasitology lab practical next week or wait until after finals are all over in about two weeks and risk it not playing there anymore since the theater only has movies for a short time. I could always just wait for the DVD to come out and rent it. But I kind of love seeing movies on the big screen. Oh, the debate with myself....

Also, I got to try a blood draw from a dog today. And I managed to hit the vein on my first try. That was super exciting.

Went to new volunteer orientation with my s.o. tonight at the therapeutic riding center. The people there are so nice! And I got to pet horses 🙂 The people who run the place were so interested in getting to know us, and giving me suggestions on who to work with since I am interested in learning about horses for vet school in the future. They gave me and my bf all the leftover snacks because we were the last volunteers to leave, and said we were a "great couple!". 😛 Gotta love it. I am still a little nervous about learning how to handle horses though. :scared:

Haha, wow I'm going to my therapeutic horse volunteer orientation this upcoming Monday! I'm nervous about learning how to handle horses, too (I've only ever touched a horse maybe 2 or 3 times in my life!), but I'm really excited, too. I'm already going to vet school later this year, but I'm still shadowing and trying to get in interesting and fun experiences! It sounds like this therapeutic horse center is going to be great! 🙂

If your shelter ever wants to save more, I could hook them up! We got in 36,000 dogs and cats last year and euthanized 20,000 of them. And I'm pretty much as south as you can get. So you can really say you got them from "down south" (I used to live in NJ and I remember how much people loved to hear that they saved a dog from "down south".)

Oh and if you ever want kittens when it's not kitten season in NJ we've done trips taking kittens up to shelters in Maryland. Jersey is only a few more hours north. Keep it in mind once you get your 75 dogs adopted out.

As a disclaimer the shelter I work for is county run, we don't have a choice but to euthanize so many due to lack of space 🙁

Trust me, therapeutic horses are about the best possible horses for someone new to learn with. They are trained to be tolerant of all sorts of things, so you can focus on what you're learning without overly worrying about what the horse will do. Have fun, guys! 😀

PM'ed you 👍

I ran six miles this morning even though my legs were really really sore. It was pretty awful but I'm proud of myself for persevering through the pain. Even if I don't get into vet school this year I'm gonna look sa-mokin' come summer. 🙂

I'm starting up the Couch to 5K this spring again and hope to have worked my way up to about 6 miles by the end of the summer! Kudos for getting it done!

I have a lot of friends who have had success with that program! What helps me the most is running with a group outside. It's waaay more fun. I've decided that I'm going to run my first half marathon instead of going to my undergrad graduation this May. Surprisingly, my running is helping me with my senioritis more than anything else. 😉

Good luck!

Yeah, I did the C25K last summer and then ran 2 5Ks in September before falling off the wagon in October. I'm hoping that the nicer weather will help motivate me to get going again (because I HATE running inside). Exciting to hear it helps with senioritis though, from which I am suffering dearly-maybe it will help me get through spring quarter!

Yes, it's just so motivating! Plus, after I get all my energy out I'm calm enough to do homework haha. I'm like a border collie pretty much.

Ok, guys, this is what SDN is all about: SUPPORTING each other and NOT fighting.

Cheetos, New England Clam chowder & Lobster rolls at Quizno's starting Monday?

Wait, what? Quizno's is going to have lobster rolls?! Wonder if that applies even to ones here in the "EAT BEEF" capital of the midwest. Out here, it seems like "seafood" = catfish or something.

i haven't posted anything to the rant or rave thread yet but this news is too good to not share. i took my 16 year old cat to the icu a couple of nights ago due to not eating (serious for him), not wanting loving (VERY serious for him), and all around crappy-lookingness. he couldn't settle, was walking around the house, lying down for 2 minutes, getting up, lying down again . . . turns out he had pretty severe cholangiohepatitis, to the point that there were very clear deposits and mineralizations in his bile ducts and gall bladder. his liver enzymes were also elevated, his white count was low, and his plasma looked icteric.

today, he is BACK TO HIS NORMAL SELF! 😍he's eating, loving, and purring. i am so happy. i thought i would lose him for a little while. we don't have to place an ne tube or anything. we might even get him home tomorrow 😀

i've worked in emergency medicine - both animal and human - for years, but was thinking i'd go into wildlife and conservation medicine once i started school. now, i'm not so sure. the ER/ICU bug seems to have crawled back.

so, imo, the most awesome cat in the world is on his way to making a full recovery. a therapy cat and a professional feline model (he's the grey cat in the upper left), felix has done and seen it all. welcome back, buddy 😀

This is such good news!! Glad to hear he's doing better!

Geriatric cats = 😍 . Well all cats = love but I have a soft spot for old kitties.

He looks worried in that picture... haha.

i know! it's like "please don't let me get heartworm. i really don't want to die suddenly after having convulsions and diarrhea."

This is such good news!! Glad to hear he's doing better!

thanks 🙂 16 is an estimate. we found him, already castrated, in a barn in central ny in the middle of winter. missing teeth, starving at 15 lbs . . . no younger than 8, for sure, but quite possibly older. we're so lucky to have him 😍

final diagnosis is combo pancreatitis and cholangiohepatitis. they're going to run another panel on him tomorrow am, and then if continues going as it has, we'll get him back tomorrow afternoon. yay!!!

I seem to finally be mostly recovered from the bronchitis/asthma flare up of death,
👍 At the end of my second week with bronchitis, I can sympathize (though luckily, I don't have asthma with it). The rest of it is gone now, so I'm left with a cough that makes my classmates look at me like I'm dying of consumption.

Small rave: My school is going to the AUS Men's Basketball Championships! Yay! We never go to the championships of any sport! 😀

so glad everyone is on the mend! get it all out of your systems now, to ensure a long, quiet, restful summer before school starts 🙂

lunajett: My school's Quizno's is. & lobster/seafood salad. I'm getting to channel my New England diet a few months early 😛

Yay, phaedraeos!!! Your kitty resembles my kitty (who is female and abouts...5?)

TES: I did some exercising yesterday and didn't have such good of a result 🙁 Swimming today for therapy!!!
Rave: just exercised for the first time in nearly a month, after pretty much sitting around at my desk for weeks in the mean time when not coughing away at my job... I seem to finally be mostly recovered from the bronchitis/asthma flare up of death, since I made it through the work out without collapsing (and with only one puff from the inhaler half way through haha)! My muscles have apparently atrophied to the size of itty-bitty-puny-ness though since my legs cramped hard when I tried walking upstairs afterwards, but feels good to be physically exhausted from choice and not illness 😎 Can't wait to get back to my boxing class!

That makes me really really happy 🙂😀🙂😎😀😍😍😍

I had the best day today, slept until noon, was super productive on my research paper, drank a delicious vanilla soy latte, ate free donuts at the grocery store, and grabbed my good friend from the airport! Oh, and I totally rocked the practice Bio GRE, which I was really worried about (here's to hoping the real Bio GRE is similar!)

It's also gorgeous and snowing outside right now! I <3 snow!!! (The good, fluffy kind that happens around 30 degrees).

Oh, and I am finally shadowing again starting Monday, so I can get a great LOR for applications this fall! weeeeee!

Haha, apparently I put exceeded my limit of smilie faces the first time I tried to post this message. LOL.

My life is finally falling into place! It's so nice to know that I can play this summer and will be starting vet school in August. 🙂
I just ordered my Lonely Planet Bolivia book and am ridiculously excited about spending several months in South America. I've been craving this for such a long time and finally I get to do it! I'll volunteer for a good amount of the time in probably two separate areas with kids and wildlife, and also adventure around and go to tiny little towns and attempt to speak with locals in my pathetic spanish. (I'm trying to study before I go, but I'm too caught up reading all the awesome things I'll get to do there)! I can't decide, though, if I want to spend the entire time covering all of Bolivia, which has tons to see, or if I should venture into neighboring countries. Decisions, decisions. I wish I had a million dollars and tons of time so I could spend a few years backpacking South America and still be able to get into vet school. But that's not happening, and I'm so lucky that I'll get to be doing this and going to vet school! 😀

I was able to fully fix my furnace without assistance.

Another DIY feather in my cap....

:soexcited:

I visited some parts of Peru that were directly bordering Bolivia last summer. Peru's a pretty awesome place to visit if you have time! Definitely visit Lake Titicaca (which is shared by Peru and Bolivia) and if you are able to cross onto the Peruvian side spend some time in Puno. My boyfriend and I really loved Puno. We did a trip to the floating islands out of Puno and spent the night on the island of Amantani.

We also bordered Bolivia in Chile at Lake Chungara which is more eco-touristy. There wasn't really anything to do there other than be in awe at how beautiful everything there was.

I'm super jealous about your trip! I'm dying to head back to South America but I don't think it'll be happening again this summer for me. Have funnnn!!

I love spring break! I haven't had a week off since high school!
I love my dogs! I missed them so much😍.
My mom bought my hamster a new cage and it's huge and he loves it!
I'm about to go get fresh milk from the creamery in West Virginia. Amazing.
I got to catch up with my second family last night and am glad to hear that they are doing well.
I'm going to the national zoo this week!!!
I'm going to go to the national archives to hunt down some primary sources for my Holocaust History honors option on Nazi Dr's. Really excited!

There is SUNSHINE today. I want to go lay on the pavement and soak it up like a plant because omfg I missed the sunshine.

Spent like 4 straight days on the computer... but my poster on my thesis research is almost ready for presenting!

*squee*

Oi, SH, are you still coming for APICS? If so, let me know. I'll PM you my cell phone number, and a mini-SDN meet might be possible. 🙂

Rave: 88% on my last biochemistry test! WOO!

I PMed you. It should be noted that I'm not as crazy as SDN makes me seem lol

And whooo for the 88%! That's awesome!

This is for those people who have worked their entire lives at a dead end job and have reached a place in their lives where the light at the end of the tunnel is finally visible.

No more dead end job, something new and exciting is visible. I can see it yay, the light, and I can see structure in that light.

Only a few more years to go then everything changes. yay 😀, I've finally found my niche in life. So Excited. :highfive:

I got home to this on the dining room table. My mom had it sent to me as soon as she found out I got in. 🙂
