Job interview went well this morning! It would be only 8 hours a week this summer, but it would continue into the school year, which is nice. Keeping my fingers crossed! Now onto this path exam. Not going to go nearly as well, I think...

I have a fantastic apartment set up for August. It had everything I was looking for but was advertised with a kitchenette that really turned out to be a microwave and fridge - the only sink was the one in the bathroom and the kitchen was shared (3 flights of stairs away), so I was super bummed. I ended up emailing them on a whim suggesting they renovate, totally not expecting anything to come of it - but today she emailed me back saying they will put in a stove and sink over the summer, making it essentially a full kitchen. I had even offered to pay more in rent if that was the case, but the rent is going to stay the same! Soooo excited because I've been burning money in gas and this is right downtown, close to school, pet friendly, furnished, I only have to rent it during the school year AND it's less than what I currently pay out in the boonies. :soexcited:

RAVE: spent the entire night from ~9p to 5a collecting all sorts of research data on the leatherback turtles that nest on the north end of grenada! completely amazing 🙂 full data collected on 13 turtles, partial data collected on 3 turtles! 😀

RANT: driving back home (in a bucket of bolts on terrible roads), with about 20 minutes left in the 1.5h trip, the muffler decided to drop out from under my car. insert panic attack here :O holy moly that was traumatizing. glad to be home safe but not exactly sure what to do from here...

If this is where I'm thinking it is, I'm jealous. I asked if they'd be cool with month to month not during the school year and they weren't (totally understandable) but I'm glad you got it!

Chances are looking pretty good that I'm going to get my adorable new kitten next weekend, ahead of schedule! That means I've gotta get my butt in gear and get the stupid letter from my landlord proving that I can have cats. Eeks, I've gotta get my place kitten proofed!!! Which I suppose means actually cleaning my apartment, first...

Must be different places, these landlords were all about the month to month agreement. 🙂

The symposium that I helped organize(along with the rest of the committee) and was co-fundraiser for won "best educational wet lab/event" at school yesterday!

I also got spay certified today, which means I can start performing spays on cats at the shelters/TNRs, etc we volunteer at on my own and also start teaching students how to perform neuters on cats.

Since everything else in my life is a "rant" right now, my rave is that I always have NStarz to talk to when I'm going through a hard time no matter how busy she is (ahem, finals week!). It's always nice to know who your true friends are! <3 you
Aw shucks.

After last week's horrendous GoT episode... SO happy to have such a great episode tonight... OATHKEEPER!! I've been waiting for you and it was worth it. So worth it. Cue my fangirling. To top it all off, today was my brithday, so it made seeing my ship that much better.

It was good, but they're really deviating from the book right now in some parts and it's throwing me off haha

happy birthday rainheart!!!
Thanks 😀

I've heard that have, but I read that season 4 was going to start deviating a bit. So, not so unexpected (but I still don't understand why they do it). I want to read the books in all my spare time during vet school... but not sure when I'll actually be able to.

No kidding, I have no idea what's going on with Ghost & Bran right now. TOTALLY different from the books. WTF?

I visited the clinic where I did the majority of my shadowing and ended up being employed at during my gap year and they told me they've really been struggling to find a replacement for me. It made me feel really good... I miss them 🙁

Oh and also- yesterday my boyfriend and I completed our first half marathon! I sprained my ankle pretty badly back in February and training pretty much came to a halt around finals and the week leading up to the race due to the craziness of being back in the states and having a million people to see in so little time. Because of those situations, my goal was just to finish. But I finished almost 15 mins faster than my original goal time (2:30) 🙂 everything from my waist down hurts but I have a couples massage scheduled for tomorrow so hopefully that will help. I already want to find another one to run! The running community is so amazing.

The fitness place where I do aerial aerobics (lyra, silks, trapeze) is primarily a pole studio. I had some classes I paid for that were about to expire, so I went to one of their intro pole classes this evening. Was really fun! Although I'm missing a lot of skin and about as bruised as my first lyra lesson...

Sounds about right. My friends and I have classes through a Groupon deal but we haven't had a chance to go in a while. I wouldn't mind trying to find a place near me over the summer to keep it up. I'm soo awkward and not graceful though. Haha.

After my equine med exam yesterday, I did a tour for the three students interviewing that day. I gave them my card in case they had any questions about applying, student life, etc. By the time I made it back to my parents' house that night, one of them had emailed me to thank me for being such a great tour guide and said I gave off so much "good energy" and I helped to keep her from feeling nervous. 😀 Made my day!

We have a new doctor at the SA clinic I volunteer at and she was soooo nice!
I actually met her a couple weeks ago when I took my pup in for eating the remote haha so she remembered me!
So we had another volunteer and a vet tech in training there today that were shadowing her so I decided to tag along with a different doctor while he was doing appointments.
She literally went to go find me and asked me if I wanted to go watch her mass removal surgury and of course I said yes!
Then later on she took me aside to show me xrays of another patient that came in with a HUGE mass in its abdominal region and it made me feel so welcomed after being gone for awhile due to golf and school and she was just so awesome and nice! Yeee

That moment when something you've been trying to get your brain around finally clicks!!! Ahhhh..... so nice.

With as much stuff as has been stressing me these past couple weeks (mostly non-school related at this point), I have to say I'm feeling happy that I'm now in charge of planning all of the exotics/zoo/wildlife lectures for SAVMA Symposium next year, which will be a great networking opportunity, and that I designed what is, as of today, the official Symposium logo, which I'm feeling pretty proud of 🙂. It's nothing all that special, but it still feels good to see things you've designed out there and knowing that many people will eventually possess various free items emblazoned with said logo, haha. Can't wait to design more stuff!

Got my first paying job - vet assistant for the summer :soexcited: I'll basically be full time too, so lots of experience is coming my way

Edit: And the place I'll be working at is mostly small animal but one of the vets does some work with exotics/wildlife, and they're kind of a middle man for people who can't transport injured wildlife all the way to the rehab centers around here. They had a baby hawk there today 😍

Congrats!!!:highfive: I hope it's a great place to work and that you enjoy it and learn a lot!

My own similar rave: I may have a second job this summer. It would be a really great job - relaxed environment, nice coworkers and boss, lots of cat experience, more practice working directly with clients and not only the animals. Yay!😀

Can't get into details, but had a cool afternoon involving a big cat. Wasn't quite as epic as the polar bear since the cat was already partly sedated for the drive there, but still an interesting experience. And it looks like I'm gonna get to see another big cat exam on tuesday, assuming she doesn't schedule it during one of our classes with in class assignments worth enough points to not want to miss... although I might just do it anyway.

One of our post-surgical patients, who had cervical disk surgery almost three months ago and everyone had basically given up on (he even spent a solid week in oxygen when he developed postoperative pulmonary edema), sat up on his own and kicked his back feet this past weekend. He even licked my hand and gave me a little wag, despite being vicious until now. It's stupid but stuff like that reminds me to always withhold judgement as much as I can, and why I love doing what I do. At the same time, I think I'll really miss being a tech and having the time to be this involved with a long term patient.

I hope she lets some of the rest of us in on it if they come back on Tuesday, I feel like we've barely gotten to do anything for this class so far...

My rave is that its the weekend! And only like 6 days left of classes then FREEDOM! For a few months anyway 😀

What can I say? Carnivores rule, primates suck! Yes, I suppose I just insulted myself, haha. Tuesday will be one from the zoo, and she actually wasn't going to mention it to the rest of the groups so that you all wouldn't get mad (so shhhh!). But she said there's going to be gorilla and orangutan (I think) exams coming up for the primate group! 😉

I thought my job was just going to be mostly kennel work with limited vet assisting...turns out they're actually willing to train me as a tech, so it'll be kennel work one day a week and tech work the other 2.5 days. Which means about 25 hours a week of tech work! :claps: Plus I got to pet a chicken today - first day and one of the other techs said the vet that does avian/exotics usually doesn't let new employees shadow during those exams. She also said they hadn't hired anyone new in a long time because either they didn't find anyone worth training or the people they offered a job to didn't show up. So I feel special 😀

Well when I'm playing with baby gorillas next semester you'll be sorry! 😛 Honestly, my heart goes out to carnivores, but realistically I thought focusing on primates was a better career move for me. Plus, baby gorillas. 😀

I'd take a snow leopard over a baby gorilla any day 😉 But I can't lie, I do like the primates. They were my second choice after carnivores after all. Plus, primates are so photogenic! I tend to spend a lot of time photographing them when I visit zoos, so gotta love 'em for that, too.

So....this is a small rave but since I'm not advertizing on my facebook until later - I want to brag to SOMEONE. Back in November, I signed up for Weight Watchers online. Really liked it. Stuck to it for 3 weeks.....gained some weight when I cheated for a couple weeks, stopped wanting to weigh myself, fell of of wagon, holidays, excuses.....cue 5 weeks ago, stepped on the scale - saw a number I've never ever imagined seeing and although I didn't start tracking again - I started paying more attention to what I was eating. THREE weeks ago, I got totally back up and going and my husband signed up with WW to help support me and I've been super super dedicated. I've lost 8.5 lbs :-D SO motivated to keep going and love love love this program and how it works if you can keep dedicated to it. My goal is to reach my goal weight before graduation next year. TOTALLY GOING TO DO IT!!! Thanks for listening. :-D

Newington area? Or morningside area?

My boyfriend is the best cook ever; he constantly amazes me with the delicious food he makes! I'm going to get so fat if/when we start living together.

So after getting turned down for a good-paying USDA summer tech job, I was referred to another behavioral researcher (by the USDA doc that turned me down) with high recommendations from him and was offered a job on the spot! Looking forward to 40 hours split between poultry behavioral research, manning a res hall desk, and staying at my volunteer position in Neurology!

Wahoo! Parents rang me this weekend to say they're surprising me with a trip home for the week of my brothers law school graduation & my sisters 18th birthday. So happy! Was bummed out I was going to be missing so many milestones this month, but now I get to be there for two of them! 🙂

Small rave, but the birds outside FINALLY figured out that the strange plastic thing stuck to my window is full of birdseed for them. I'm not sure who's more entertained now, me or the cat 🙂

Probably you. Only because you will be entertained by both the birds and the cat watching the birds. The cat is only interested in the birds... 😉

I have a window feeder too! My birds figured it out pretty much right away though, haha. Probably because I originally had a more conventional feeder sitting out on a table on my balcony that they frequented, but I had to take that away when the squirrels started fighting both with each other and my cat (through the glass) over it. The window feeder is wonderfully squirrel proof--not to say that he didn't try to reach it by climbing the screen door next to it a couple times before giving up.
