I had an interview earlier today for a kennel position in a VCA hospital. I hate making predictions, but I feel as though it went well. I talked with the vet and the manager for over an hour about various things and they seemed interested in my experiences and stories, so.... maybe it will work out. Though this position is in the kennel, it pays more than my previous vet assistant job. It's part time but it's also very close to home, so that's all a plus to me.
If it doesn't work out, that's okay. I literally have three dozen applications still out at various places so, it's just a matter of time. Kennel work isn't my ideal job, but the head vet was very pleasant and seemed very open to facilitating my veterinary interests (she was impressed with my resume, hails from my hometown area in NW Ohio, and was a doppleganger of one of my previous roommates).

Our clinic's vaccine rep took us out to a fancy dinner tonight.
I tried sushi for the first time and actually liked it! Also said rep is 25 and cute and the vet I work with who just graduated in 2014 has a crush on him.
It's a shame the reason he took us out to dinner is because he's moving across the country.

PS your response is awesome and she'll love it
I'm going to interview with my state's vet med association for an event coordination internship. It's only part time and you don't need to be a current student so I'm hopeful that it will work out. It might be a good networking position and I've always been interested in doing something with veterinary profession advocacy.
My puppy has hiccups and they keep waking her up.
I love it.

This super adorable 3-4 year old girl was sitting quietly and very well behaved while her mom and I were talking about their pet. All of the sudden she stands up and goes "you're really pretty." Dawwwww. I don't know where her definition of beauty comes from, but I will take it!

I had a little girl in the room with her mom who used my highlighters to draw two pictures of what I presume is me. I can't decide where I want to hang the pictures...
I'm halfway through my first round of veterinary school final exams and my world isn't burning to the ground. I am happy 😀.
What a long road it's been, but undergrad is done!
4.0/Summa cum laude, never thought that would happen. So thankful to all the faculty and people who were supportive and amazing to me at this university.

Thank you everyone! I was speaking to a girl today and SDN came up. She's pre-med and had a pretty negative view of this site, and I was thinking "Hmmm, everyone seems pretty nice at least over on the pre-vet side."

That's so funny, because my SO is on the pre med forum all the time and loves it. He always raves about what an encouraging and helpful atmosphere it is. Then he will just read through the pre vet stuff every now and then and is like, "wow people over there are so mean sometimes!" 😛
Where are the pics of you and the pup getting your dilplomas? What a long road it's been, but undergrad is done!

So today I woke up with the beginnings of a cold.
I went to the store after I got released from school. No, I didn't get medicine.
I got a giant frosted brownie.

Sometimes I peruse the threads over there. What I find really crazy is that some posts can get the amount of 'likes' that they do. It just goes to show you how much traffic that forum sees compared to us.That's so funny, because my SO is on the pre med forum all the time and loves it. Found out I'm getting a stethoscope and raise at work by the end of the month!

At least 8,000 of my likes are from WW alone, don't you even start with me 😛How do you think @Mad Jack got over 25,000 likes? 😉

Only 8,000? You must be even more popular over there than I thought 😀At least 8,000 of my likes are from WW alone, don't you even start with me 😛
Lol, I think he has a case of intellectual dyslexia. That's friken hilarious! He will definitely be getting s*** from me because he made it sound like all butterflies and rainbows. Before I created an SDN account he said "be careful, the pre vet threads can get pretty intense and people can be pretty mean"! Such a brat. He's been on sdn for about 8 years I think. He doesn't come on pre vet anymore since I mentioned that he should stay away just in case he catches me talking about him 😛
Pre-allo is good to have around though, because you can go over there and read threads and be that much more thankful for the pre-vet side and sane people in general.
I was actually shocked by how much better the prevet culture was than the premed one on here. Like, there's a reason I hang out and play WW with you guys so much.

I'm having a sorta-bad day so I went over to pre-allo to see what it's all about. Also....just the kahunas some pre-meds seem to have. I'm creeping on one thread where the OP is debating on asking the prof to round up his grade so he can get a 3.67 instead of a 3.33. Dude, you said you skipped a lab, causing you to lose points. I'm willing to bet that the syllabus mentioned those were required.

This would be a rant, but everything ended up ok, so it's a rave instead. Both of our surgeries today (thankfully they were just dentals, plus a mass removal on one) were geriatric, so we had them a little light on the anesthesia. And both, with no warning, were suddenly awake and trying to jump off the table at some point during their procedures. The first time I was in the middle of scaling teeth, second I had finished the dental and doc was about to cut for the mass removal. I honestly felt like I was just scrambling and like I lost 5 years of my life expectancy, but we got everything under control both times and the doc said afterwards that I work very well under pressure 😀
We had an old dog dental a few weeks ago - he didn't wake up during the surgery, but going under and coming out of anesthesia were both really rough. Most stressful dental ever. Glad everything was okay! This would be a rant, but everything ended up ok, so it's a rave instead. Weird thing was they were totally fine going under and waking up. One fo them was back to being annoyingly loud in less than 20 minutes after recoveryWe had an old dog dental a few weeks ago - he didn't wake up during the surgery, but going under and coming out of anesthesia were both really rough. My interview went well this morning with my state's vet association so I'm hoping that will result in a positive outcome. Work went well this afternoon. When I came home my OSU interview invite was waiting for me. Okay day. I also deposited my first paycheck in my account so I can buy gas and ice cream tomorrow.
We had a similar situation with a piglet. We had to knock him down to cast his broken leg, but half an hour into casting he started to wake up and slipped his cast off. Three times we had to up the Telazol to keep him sufficiently under to cast him. Then the next day he slipped it off again. This would be a rant, but everything ended up ok, so it's a rave instead. I heard gas and ice cream is not the best combination, you may want to try a different topping...My interview went well this morning with my state's vet association so I'm hoping that will result in a positive outcome. Holy crap, finally the AVMA is saying smart things regarding new schools opening and increasing seats overall! From Dr. Dicks' recent article:
"As the cost of education continues to climb, and as college students become increasingly knowledgeable of the financial hardships associated with the profession’s high debt-to-income ratio, this applicant-to-seat ratio is forecast to decline even with a constant number of available seats through 2025. However, if the rate of increase in the number of seats at existing schools continues the long-term trend and two new schools are added, then the combination of new seats and declining applicants will bring the applicant-to-seat ratio to an estimated 1.04:1 by 2025. While this is likely to be a worst-case scenario, the competitive environment at veterinary schools is currently increasing from highly competitive to extremely competitive; veterinary schools will in the near term have to compete for students."
"The addition of 100 students above our baseline projection would potentially reduce annual income for each new veterinarian (1,298 in the class of 2015) by $500, and the combined effect of two new schools and a 2 percent growth rate in existing school class sizes would potentially lower starting salaries by over $3,000 per year per veterinarian by 2025. This decline in income would exacerbate the existing disparity between growth rates in income and debt, causing the debt-to-income ratio to rise. The rising debt-to-income ratio will likely accelerate the reduction in applicants, perpetuating the potentially negative effects on the market for veterinary education."
