That’s what’s so different about this area. A town in south jersey is only about a square mile or so. Some are even smaller. If you go on google maps and look around Illinois you’ll see spots of a large town or a city with roads leading to other large towns, and for miles in between it’s farms and a few really small towns. If you look at south jersey it’s a bunch of small towns butting up against each other to form a big mass of people. So when you grow up there, you have in 10 square miles what most places in the country have in 10 times that space.
I like when municipalities aren't adjacent to each other. That way you have areas "outside the city limits" to buy property. Plus, as cities grow in population, they can annex land and continue to expand. It's weird and claustrophobic to me to have cities butting up against each other. No room for expansion that way, and no land that's legally outside the city limits and in the jurisdiction of only the county.

(Not talking about Illinois. Talking about metro Detroit)

My hometown is 6.8 sq miles with ~42,000 people but I'm a 5 min walk to the train station to NYC, 10 min walk to the mall, and basically anything I need is 15 mins or less (mostly less) away. I'm a 35 min train ride to Penn Station (heart of NYC). I don't like that much congestion but I consider a place that's over 2.5-3 hours away far away.

My hometown has 800 people. You have to drive 28 miles just to get to a grocery store. It's an hour and fifteen minutes to the closest hospital, and it's nothing for us to drive 2.5-3 hours to a "big city" on a whim to go shopping on a Saturday.

I can’t imagine how much that took to tell him. You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for.

Also, I love that he says “talk to me goose.” That’s amazing.

My baby only woke up twice last night and the first time he went back to sleep in just a couple of minutes!

My previous rave was that he slept through the entire night... this sleep regression thing for the last month has been a bitch...

Follow up from my rant post last week: My doctor ordered me my Eko stethoscope last week, and it’s coming in tomorrow! I’m checking the tracking on it every 20 minutes to see where it is. It’s being shipped to the office so I can set it up and use it during the day, and I’m working tomorrow so it’s perfect. I’m so excited! He got me the Eko that comes with the stethoscope already attached, so I won’t have to put the core on my already super long master classic II veterinary scope (32” tube). I’ll post a follow up to let you guys know how it is!

You'll have to charge it before use

Hopefully it comes in the morning with the normal mail since it’s being shipped USPS, and I can charge it to use for afternoon appointments. I’m going to find a way to use it tomorrow. It’s going to happen!

I’m having to buy a whole new wardrobe for my new job. I guess that’s more of a rant - I’ll miss my scrubs - but having the new job is worth it. And I’ve found some good deals. And some not as good deals, but worth it anyway. Still waiting on my Betabrand pants, but I’m sold on the Rothy’s. I’m not sure about Thirdlove... still deciding if I want to keep the bra or not.

I have a trip to an outlet mall slated this weekend for a bit of a LOFT hookup. We’ll see how that goes.

Change is scary. And a little expensive. I had to buy a car too...

I loooove my beta brand pants!!! And I turned my mom onto them too.

Didn’t like third love bras, but I have a really hard time finding good fitting bras in general so not holding it against the brand, rather, it’s another strike against my boobs.

The one normal one I got fits okay, but it’s not like... special. And then the racer back one is too... too far apart? Like it’s trying to make my boobs go into my armpits. It’s not good.

I think I’ll send them both back, try and find a $40 option for the racer back, and then I have extra $ for something else. I just have to try to resist just getting more shoes...

Side note: your new job is my eventual goal and I will probably be pming you at some point with questions 😛

Home hospice and euthanasia.

It’s been fun to tell family about it and see how they respond, but I know y’all get it.

I am relieved that I get to provide this service even in hospital. I can only imagine the elevation of providing it in home. Glad you found a good place to be and happy for your clients that you are the one there for their time of need.

My former roommate is in this field as well! She loves it and I can't think of a person better suited to that type of work. Are you with one of the bigger national companies or is there a more local one in your area that was hiring? CO has a weird mix of both and I'm always curious as to what the spread of opportunities looks like in other areas

Is the 32" pretty much for LA? I bet it attenuates some of the sounds compared to standard lengths for SA stuff.
I’ve had no problem hearing what I need to hear with the 32”. Maybe you do get a little bit of loss, but I haven’t noticed anything major. I also like how it’s not bulky, and since I’m tall it doesn’t look weird when I have it around my neck lol.

Lap of Love.

They seem absolutely amazing so far, and I get benefits. Big girl benefits.

I’ve referred people to lap of love before and people have always been very happy with it. I really like the doctor who works for them in central NJ. It takes a special kind of person to want to do veterinary hospice and euthanasia and it says a lot about who you are. In a good way, of course.

Ooo, tax deduction on all 'dem miles*. Plus lots of tunes traveling between clients.

* Not an accountant, not tax advice lulz.

They do the full $0.58 per mile, so it should help pay for Sharon the Subaru. And I like driving (here, not like in Houston) so that part is fine. I'll just have to be careful about Starbucks and stuff...

And I'm going to look at Podcasts, which I have not previously listened to many of.

Listen to My Dad Wrote a Porno. I push this one hard anytime anyone brings up podcasts but seriously, it is hilarious enough I'm planning a trip around seeing them live next year lol.

Mad respect and congratulations @twelvetigers

Also, because I know you’re petite like me, I shop a lot online at Loft to get their smaller petite sizing that isn’t always in stores 🙂

I’m not really all that tiny - I’m 5’6” and because of my generous derrière I usually wear a size 8 or 10.

I do like Loft though.

12 hours ago I was an idiot and accidently cleared all files off my laptop, and only a few could be rescued from recycling. Very, very few were backed up elsewhere. See above note re: I'm an idiot.

$130 later, after much anxiety and many hours of babysitting software, I have (most of) my files back. A few things were sacrificed to the gods of corruption, but thankfully the most important files all look intact.

My boss is currently out of the country so I didn't have to have the 'I might have deleted my entire first year of grad school today' conversation. I'm so lucky I didn't lose anything crucial to my own stupidity, and I am backing EVERYTHING up from now and for forever.

I'm going to sleep now.

Which software did you use? EaseUS? Because they came in clutch a couple years ago when my friend accidentally formatted his hard drive and deleted several hours of video files that he needed to make a promotional video for some company. It’s amazing (and a little scary) how well it retrieves lost files. It brought back files that were deleted years ago and just never overwritten.

Yup! They saved my life.

Oh my gosh, their output is ridiculous. My documents were burried 9 folders deep in the recovered files. It's such a maze of temp files and windows on windows files, it took a lot of searching to even find the stuff I was looking for.

I got to scrub in last night for a super neat surgery that is the kind where the clinicians say you might never see another one like that in your career. SO COOL. Just further cements my goal of being a surgeon at the end of all this school!

It finally came in! I’m so excited! It really does amplify sounds a lot compared to analogue stethoscopes.

Oh wait and 1 more rave. I’m 6’3 and forever skinny. Like, REALLY skinny. It was always a point of self consciousness for me and at my lowest (while still 6’3) I was 130 lbs. Usually people are excited about losing weight, but this is a similar yet opposite struggle. I gained a lot of weight over the course of freshman year of college and got up to 160 lbs and felt like I looked really good. Still some more to go, but I was happy. Then I went to Mexico, got ascariasis (who the hell gets ascariasis?) and went back down to 130 lbs. For the last 3-ish years I’ve been steadily going up but progress was slow. Today I stepped on the scale and was at 161 lbs! So I’m officially the heaviest I’ve ever been, in a good way.

I feel this struggle so hard. I always bit my tongue when wanting to complain how skinny I was, since it seemed insincere, but it's still a struggle, especially if underweight or if self-conscious about being scrawny.

Congrats!

What helped me in my 20s for muscle gaining was weightlifting (and sleeping big, eating big).

What helped me in my 30s was working my *** off (well, losing one's *** is actually bad, I miss my derriere) but mostly metabolism slows down so watch out re: fat gain.

Hi everyone!
This is my first post! I hope I am posting in the correct place but, I just wanted to mention how grateful I am that I found this forum. This fall I will be a third time applicant and I have been dealing with a lot of self-doubt and anxiety due to the rejections. I often get it in my head that I'm the only one who is going through this devastating feeling and no one can relate .. that is until I found everyone here! Everyone's comments are so supportive and truly understand the struggle of chasing vet med as a career. Your advice although not directed at me, has still been incredibly encouraging! Thanks everyone and have a lovely day 🙂
