isnt it a thing that retail places will purposely keep some listings open continuously for some sort of gain?

They're always accepting applications online, they just keep that part of the website up all year. But I think they only advertise when they're actively hiring. So for the most part, I'm pretty sure if you apply when there isn't an active ad out you're just throwing your application out into the void, which sucks and leads people on. At least for this store.

I am a teacher and I am “joking, but not joking” when I say at least AI will never replace me because someone needs to prevent the children from accidentally killing themselves. That is very true of any kind of job that involves directly caring for a person or animal, including vet med and pet grooming. A lot of my friends’ jobs are potentially at risk though.

Final house spam for a while…we’re officially all dried in (except for the garage door). We have a roof, windows, doors, and walls. One hiccup with a window the wrong size that will need fixed when a new window comes in in a few weeks, but it’s been a whirlwind ten days.

The number of nosy neighbors has been astounding. We’re averaging over one person per day driving down my 800 ft driveway to rubberneck at the house. And the house is very visible from the road! But as long as they stay in their vehicle, I guess it isn’t the end of the world until I can get a gate put up.

Eventually the brown raw siding will be painted white and the green areas will be bricked. Posts and patio concrete will go in at the end so they don’t get damaged. And maybe one day we’ll have grass again.

From the road, the house looks a lot bigger than the 2,000 sq ft is truly is.

Somehow I still have acceptable antibodies so no booster for me 😎 thank GOD cause I was stressed getting stuff in before the deadline because it has been impossible to track down the records of the actual vaccination

Okay, so like, when I signed up for vet school, did I also sign up to be the freaking Snow White of every neighborhood I live in? Why is this the second year in a row I've had baby birds near my house that needed assistance??? The first one was easy because it was a nestling and I could not physically reach the nest to just pop him back in. This time it's a fledgling and I'm really struggling to see if his eye is as messed up as it looks or not and I don't want to touch him until the rehab calls me back and confirms he needs assistance.

Is this a rant? A rave? I love baby critters as much as the next person but dang it, I really wish they'd bother someone else with their woes 😂
 
Gimpy boy has gotten SO much better at flying lately! He’s finally been able to make turns to get back to the cage when he falls down from somewhere, and today he managed to stick the landing on my plant stand instead of crashing and tumbling! I’m a proud mom 😭

Ngl when I go running through one area where I saw a bobcat exactly one time (and like a dog now I look every single time JUST IN CASE hahah) I imagine “gee what if I just happened to stumble upon an orphaned bobcat kitten” 🤣
 
Thank you all! The wonderful, evil kitty has been with me for about four years, but the ring is new.
: ) : ). Our soon-to-be animal blended family includes two cats, one dog, one horse, and surely several more once we have a house on an acre....
New Fiance did a very nice job with the ring and is an excellent step-catdad to the cat in the photo : )

You young’uns…I’m old enough to have collected OG littlest pet shop before they got cartoony and big eyed.

I still have a bunch of my old LPS toys in my garage.

The originals were much better.

They all used to do something too. Like that old English sheepdog in the photo had puppies that magneted to the mom’s belly. And that Dalmatian came with a red brush that had a magnet in it and when you brushed its belly, its tail wagged. The Siamese cat came with a scratching post and when you pushed its tail its front legs made a scratching motion. The little hamsters have a roller ball on the underside so they’ll “run” in the hamster wheel in the cage when you spin it.

I had so many. I’m pretty sure I took 100 LPS animals to school for the 100th day of school in kindergarten (in 1994!) when we got to bring 100 of something for show and tell.
 
I'm starting to split up with my long term partner. It kind of sucks but is rather overdue.

The rave is I'm leaving most house things with him and I have ADULT MONEY NOW instead of student and new grad money I had when we bought things for our first place. Which means I'm buying a bunch of **** for my new townhome and I'm just absolutely psyched to own a bookshelf with cat ramps built in. :heckyeah:
 
Forgot that i came here with my own rave - we got the ok to stop triple feeding (nurse, pump, then bottle feed at each feeding) at our two month visit yesterday. Little one had a rough start to life so we were really cramming calories in to get her weight to catch up. Most people don't have to do it for two months...basically you end up with a 30min break before you have to start with nursing again at the end of it. we gradually dropped extra feeds in the last month and she hasn't dropped off her growth curve! It got really, really hard to manage once husband went back to work so I'm glad to be done for my last month of maternity leave.
 
I had a really ****ty week BUT ive had an excellent day visiting the stockyards, getting gifts for my family, seeing the cattle drive, chilling getting some bbq and a couple beers on the patio and finishing with ice cream. It’s an absolutely gorgeous Texas day and I’m so glad I went out and got to enjoy it even with everything going on

Recent case win:

Young dog acute severe seizure disorder, ended up on prop/ket/dexmed/pheno/keppra/zoni in order to stop active cluster since she was seizing through everything they tried. Brain was fried since dog had been clustering for hours prior to getting transferred to our facility.

7 days on the vent (with 3 days of that triggering no breaths, no corneal reflex, for all intents and purposes seeming dead), numerous more in hospital once extubated. Saw her on recheck a few days ago and she is now taking steps on her own, eating/drinking great, has a personality again, and is obviously happy to be back with her family. She's making night and day improvements daily. None of us thought this dog was going to recover but owners wanted to give her a chance and I'm so excited to see how much she is thriving. Critical care medicine is damn awesome sometimes.

Solidarity - I remember having to do that for my first for like 3 weeks and I think I was hallucinating by the end of it (failure to thrive and colicky = insane sleep deprived me). I don't know how you lasted 2 months but congrats on being done! It gets better.

This is so nice to hear. I see so many vets griping online about the choice they made that I love to be reminded of the positive. The vets I know in real life love their jobs.

I am fr so excited to be a vet. I love doing little things that are just a whisper of what it will be like— like yesterday I gave a horse the shot of penicillin that the vet left behind to be administered because the only employee at the barn who gives shots just quit. It's fun doing teeny tiny vet stuff, but the owner wrote me an actual card thanking me and it was so sweet. I wrote my personal statement on a moment like that and it was really nice to have another. Obviously most of my future clients will not be like that, but it's nice knowing they're out there. It's also very nice hearing affirmation from experienced horsey people that they think I'll be a good vet.

Also not to be a microbiology and public health geek but I always think penicillin is so fun... like first antibiotic, major contributor to modern human life expectancy, thank you very much penicillin.

I think part of the problem is 1) recognizing when you're getting crispy and 2) doing something about it. I honestly was the wrong person to talk to about being a vet 4 or 5 months ago. Now that I've made a commitment to change to fix my crispy edges, i am in a better place.

I think part of this is also needing an outlet to vent. It’s pretty easy to do that online and get support from people who know what you’re going through. Even for those of us who really love our jobs, there are rough days when it’s nice to talk to people who understand.

And conversely, i think it comes off badly if you’re just constantly posting how great your job is and how much you love it. People either think you’re lying, or it makes the people who are struggling feel worse about themselves. So you’ll probably see less of the good stuff and more of the bad.
 
I struggled a little with settling in to my new vet assistant/unlicensed vet tech job. There may have been some minor breakdowns and tears around week two. I wondered if I was really cut out for this, if I was making a mistake, because there was so much I didn't know how to do and I couldn't seem to pick it up. Imposter syndrome SUCKS, y'all. But obviously, this is in the rave forum, so it got better of course.

Actually the exact turning point happened right before memorial day, when I was driving back to the clinic from my lunch break and I saw this little guy in the middle of the road.

I've never had a bottle baby before, and this tiny boy wasn't even three weeks old yet by the looks of it. Once again, I had a LOT to learn! A LOT of research and quite a few long nights of 3am feedings later, he's chunky and healthy, taking his first few bites of wet food, and using the litterbox on his own. I love his silly little face and kitten bites (ouch), and... It took a little while, but I'm in love with my future again. I'm learning so much at work now!! Every day is a little different, Saturdays are always wild, I love my job, and I'm slowly realizing that I'm better at this than I thought. I'm excited for this application cycle, and I can't wait to see what my life looks like five years from now. Hopefully, with a few extra letters at the end of my name. 😉

Oh, and his name is Rocky.
