Okay, so every qualified RDEP applicant has interivewed by now, all 65 of us. Let's discuss the pros and cons to the RDEP program.

Obviously, getting reimbursed almost $18,000 a year for three years when you come back makes it a sweet deal. And the first year with the U of U tuition is great also. Leaving us with way less debt than 95% of the schools we could go to.

So what other pros and cons do you guys see? The RDEP office was new but small. what do you all think?

Regional Dental Education Program for Utah residents.

The citation from http://www.path.utah.edu/about/education09.htm reads,
"The regional dental education program is a cooperative program between the State of Utah and Creighton University School of Dentistry. It is designed to provide a quality dental education program for Utah residents at a reasonable cost. Ten students are admitted to the program and receive the first year of their training at the University of Utah. The remainder of their training takes place at the dental school facilities at Creighton University, located in Omaha, Nebraska, which serves as the parent dental school. This arrangement provides access to a quality dental education program at a reasonable tuition rate while allowing students to remain in Utah for a portion of their education."

Cons:

1. You have to come back to Utah to gain the benefits of the RDEP program
2. If you do not come back to Utah the tuition is pricey
3. Creighton has no good basketball, football, baseball teams in either college or professional
4. You stay in Utah for another year

Pros:

1. Tution is reasonable if you come back to utah
2. You stay in Utah for another year
3. According to Dr. Christensen Crieghton has the best clinical training in the nation!

Creighton b-ball team goes to NCAA tournament almost every year. Soccer team is always nationally ranked and gone to the college cup multiple times. Just thought i'd share🙂 For football you have to become a husker fan.

Sorry but soccer does not count as a sport!

How far away are the huskers from crieghton?

boo non-soccer-fan!!! ha ha, just kidding😉 The huskers are in Lincoln, about an hour from downtown Omaha. Definitely worth checking out if you are in to college football, and I'm not even a true fan. Just a fun atmosphere.

Yeah like the fellow ute said, there are no sports in Omaha. definitely a con.

Would you guys enjoy being intimately close with the whole class in that tiny conference room? It is hard to be a back row Joe in there. I Guess that could be a pro or a con.

Damn, I thought there would have been more Utah RDEP students around here. guess not, this thread is a bust. 👎

I am in the RDEP program this year and really like it. I feel like I am getting a sweet education and am very glad I chose Creighton. I don't know how Dr. Ayers decides who to accept. Three staight days of non-stop interviews seems pretty intense. Out of the 65 or 70 who interviewed, probably 55 students looked like carbon copies: white male, RM, 20+ across DAT, interviewing everywhere, ect. Anyways, good luck. So far the RDEP program has been ideal for me and my classmates.

So how do you like being in that small room all day and what schools is everybody from in your class?

Actually, we spend very little time in the conference room. No more than two hours a day. Most of our time is spent in the huge lecture hall with all of the medical students, and in the lab. The facilities here are great. In our class we have two from the U, three from BYU, two Weber staters, two from UVSC, and one Aggie.

Another question for you. I think you have to learn more than just the head and neck anatomy, where as the guys in omaha are only learning head and neck. How do you feel about that? Do you think the first year is harder at the U than at Creighton (I know you aren't in omaha and thus aren't sure how it is for them, but what do you think)?
