Hi Everyone, so I'm looking for advice on my school list. Here's what I've got:

Colorado resident, applied in 2011, only got one interview at state school, then wait listed and rejected at the end of the summer. I applied too competitively.

3.65 cGPA 3.79 sGPA (I had a 2.6 Fresh year as an Architecture major, switched to English and Biochem double major got>3.85 the next four years, graduated in 5 years).
32 MCAT 12PS11BS9VR
Activities:
AmeriCorps (Currently)
1.5 years as research assistant in a lab at state med school
Summer Bioethics Internship
TA for a creative writing class at a prison
Hospice Volunteer (10 months by June, and currently doing this)
Hospital Volunteering (100 hrs) & Shadowing (3 docs ~50 hrs)
Honors thesis in English
Honors thesis in Biochemistry
TA for 8 classes (gen chem, o chem, and intro chem)
Director of student leadership program four 4 years
Hobbies: writing (published some poems and such), ultimate frisbee, painting, etc
Pre health club (AED)
Worked at my schools outdoor program
Alternative Breaks trip leader
Worked for a student group that promoted responsible drinking while in college

School List:
(*means I applied there in 2011)
(feel free to add or take away schools)
Tulane
Quinnipiac
Drexel*
Temple*
Albert Einstein*
Thomas Jefferson*
Hofstra
New York Medical College
Albany*
Rochester*
SUNY Upstate
Stony Brook*
UVA
Michigan State
Kentucky
Iowa
Wisconsin
Wake Forest
Loyola*
University of Vermont
Rosalind Franklin
Penn State*
Louisville
Northstate California (I think they will take applicants next year)
USC
Colorado*
Arizona

Also, I'm trying not to apply to over 30 schools. Ideally I will only apply to 20 (I don't have the money to apply to more).
Also note that Colorado is not as favorable to instate applicants as they were in years past (65% In state last year) so I'm not banking on getting in there.
Thanks! 👍

With regard to the CA schools: I'll be surprised if the "for profit" receives LCME approval to open by next year. It is theoretically possible, but their mission is to provide MD's for the central valley. It may be hard to show them that from Colorado and there is a huge excess of similarly qualified candidates from IS.

The median MCAT at USC was 34 last year...

Yeah I still don't like the idea of for profit medical school, but honestly I don't know enough about it to judge it yet. Not really sure how that will pan out. Anyways, I currently live in NorCal doing AmeriCorps and will likely live here again next year, I was also born in CA and lived here for 8 years as a kid, so it's not like I'm a total stranger to the state.

Are you from the San Joaquin Valley?

Last I looked, Commonwealth in Pa seeks to train docs for a rural part of the state. Can you see yourself doing that? Check the OOS matriculation rate for Quillen and be sure it's high enough to suit you. And be prepared to relate your strong state ties if you want to appeal to W Virginia.

On the flip side, you might look into Arizona. And if Loyola, then maybe also Creighton. If Creighton, then UNebraska.

Didn't know that about Commonwealth! I will take them off. I have a lot of family in WV, but prob not that strong of a tie. I will probably take them off too.

Arizona is a great idea!

Thanks!

Both the bolded above have a strong preference for IS applicants (unless you have ties to KY).

Other schools to consider: Toledo, MCW, SLU, and Cincinnati.

Bump: UPDATED LIST any advice would be awesome

I've focused my personal statement and app on my commitment to service, and I think these schools should appreciate that.

From a quick review, seems like you have a pretty good list and good stats. Honestly as a reapplicant, stretch your budget if possible and add more realistic and safety schools. It'll be completely worth it if you get in this year.
