Hello, I will be re-applying this upcoming cycle, and need to tweak my school list right now, as it is rather top heavy. I could also use some help with DO school selection, as I am not entirely sure about the requirements. Thanks in advance!

cGPA: 3.54, sGPA 3.46

MCAT: 515

Residence: CA

Ethnicity: ORM

Clinical Experience:
  • About 100 hours of clinical volunteering at a community clinic (which is new this cycle)
  • At least 500 hours of clinical experience as an ER scribe (which is new this cycle)
Research Experience:
  • 3.5 years experience in clinical research as an undergrad. My name wasn't put on any publications sadly, but I do have experience designing studies, writing papers and have given several presentations
Shadowing
  • Maybe about 50 hours of unpaid shadowing in EM, Orthopedics, and Psychiatry
Non-clinical volunteering
  • Around 100 hours total of a couple tutoring services
Extracurricular Activities
  • Pretty good and unique mix, with a couple leadership activities

Here is my list, roughly in order of least to most competitive per stats only. (I do realize that some of these will be harder to gain acceptance due to IS preference)

DO schools:
PCOM
AZCOM
CCOM
NSUSOM
Rowan

***note: I do not have experience shadowing a DO, nor do I have a letter of recommendation from one. I do have a LOR from at least 1 MD though.

Some schools require behavioral science classes. I have not taken any psychology classes, but have taken numerous sociology classes.

MD schools
Albany Medical College
New York Medical College
UC Davis
Commonwealth
University of Southern Florida
University of Washington
George Washington University
UC Riverside
Drexel
Tulane
Temple
UCLA
Jefferson
Tufts
UCSF
Miami
Boston

I know that with my stats, I can't be super picky but I do have a coastal city preference. I would not like to go to a school with a religious orientation.

Delete UW (not WWAMI).
Delete UCR unless you have a validated commitment to the IE.
I count 8 MD schools on your list. where you have a fair to good chance of an interview. That's a little scanty for a CA re-applicant. I recommend adding 20 hours of primary care shadowing for MD. Is that your only MCAT? If so, target another half dozen schools with a median around 33 that accept at least 15-20% OOS. Bonus for schools where you have not previously applied.

You should do well on the DO side. Get a DO letter. Even one day of shadowing is enough.

Consider adding these schools:
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Hofstra
Penn State
Oakland Beaumont
Georgetown
Medical College Wisconsin
Rosalind Franklin
St. Louis
Creighton
Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson)
any new schools that open for 2018 (Seton Hall, Roseman, etc.)

Thank you for the response. Do I really have no hope for UW? I say this because I have visited Seattle and really love the city.
Meanwhile, I will try to pull some strings to get DO shadowing/LOR.

Thank you for the response. I have added a few of the schools you mentioned. This is the first I have heard of new schools opening up, and I certainly am interested but curious as to why you suggested them. What do you see as the benefit to applying to these schools, when there is little data on applicant data, match lists, or student life?

You were not accepted anywhere when you previously applied so your main goal should be to be accepted to one medical school and it does not matter which one it is.

Other than those who will add dramatically to the diversity of the class, OOS matriculants to UW come from the states without a medical school.
UW serves as their home school.

As you are not from one of these states, your chances are vanishingly small.
