Should re-applicants completely re-write their personal statements? I plan to re-write some parts of it. However, the fundamental reason why I want to be a dentist and the experiences that have solidified my decision remain the same.

Any advice on how to approach the re-applicant personal statement?

I would think it would depend on your PS. If you talked a lot about experience that you had in your youth, you would just edit a bit and only rewrite the part in which you talk about shadowing and stuff.

IMO, I don't think a complete rewrite is necessary, parts should be sufficient.

why would it be acceptable to reuse the personal statement ?

If one could easily rewrite a personal statement, with no pressure or time constraints, why not?

It is far more difficult to get a professor to edit the date of a LOR, than it is to rewrite a personal statement......

I didn't say to reuse entirely, reworking/editing of parts and updating from the past year of experiences would be ideal considering the OP stated that the fundamental reasons and experiences are the same. Chances are that the reason that the OP did not gain admission last cycle was likely not due the PS but rather the academic part of the application (3.1/19 AA).

Regarding letters, it is also a case by case basis and not all applicants can easily come up with 3-4 new but solid letters after a year. I also think that letters can be reused if you cannot obtain anything better than the previous cycle or if you have a strong relationship with professor who knows you well and you know can provide a solid evaluation.

If your PS dropped in quality because you rewrote it, it will most likely reflect negatively on you. Same goes for LoRs. I doubt your old PS and LoRs will have as much weight as the one you will submit for the upcoming cycle, if they even read them at all. They may not even have them on file if you didn't receive an interview invite last cycle.

People suggest getting new LoR because an admission director recommended(I think NYU) it in a Q&A. Nothing definite about how reusing LoR is viewed by other adcoms, how important getting new ones is as opposed to reusing old ones, etc.

I did not rewrite my PS. I made some changes.
The only thing I changed is applying on the first day which I believe is today.
The only difference for me was being on the first batch or not.
