Hi everyone,

I have a quick question that maybe someone with experience can answer. I took the MCAT last year without much studying or preparation and didn't do too well.. I can't say what it was but let say it's above a 25 and below a 27. Needless to day, I only get 2 interview offers. But I think part of the problem also was that I applied in August...

Anyway I want to apply early this time around... I was going to retake the mcat this april, but find no time to study again. I was wondering if it is possible to send in my application sometime between june-august and indicate that I plan to retake the MCAT in august...

Are they not going to care and just base it on the old score or would they be willing to wait? I know this is a broad question, but anyone have experience like this. Anyway thanks for reading this long post and I appreciate any suggestion you have.

If you indicate that you're taking the August MCAT, they'll put you on hold until they receive your August scores.

If you don't tell them you are taking the August MCAT, they will use your old scores. If you go this route, you can send your updated scores later to any schools that are still considering you. The problem with this approach is that some schools may weed you out based on your old scores, and never see your updated MCAT.

For what it's worth, it seems like you're repeating some of the same mistakes you made last time (applying after June 1st, and not having time to study for the MCAT). Maybe there are reasons for this, and I'm not trying to get on your case. But it's going to be tough to get into medical school if you're not fully committed to it.

Thanks guys for replying, and to ntmed.. yeah that is how i'm actually feeling.. the problem is.. my major is demanding as hell and I also have to do research (required by the stupid major) at the same time, so it's kind of a dilema. Part of the reason also was that I scored consistantly well on the practice exam previous time... so.. i'm not sure if it's a hick-up on the actual mcat i took or if i'm not fully prepared. I think I can get some studying over the summer since all I have is research and a couple courses... i guess i'm just asking if anyone else has done this before too? where they submit the application in early and take the august mcat.

I have a question regarding the August MCAT: if you take the August MCAT and indicate this on your AMCAS application, will schools look at your old scores even though you are indicating that new scores are coming?

It seems like this is a possibility and also an unfair way of prescreening August MCATers before their new scores are in.

Can anyone elaborate?

If you indicate that you're taking the August MCAT, your file will not be complete until your scores are received. I wouldn't assume that admissions committees review incomplete files.

I don't understand what you mean by unfair. I've never heard of a school rejecting an applicant before their file is complete. Also, they have access to your MCAT testing history. Like I said before...your file will be put on hold.

don't bother applying this time around. take the august mcat, study this time, and apply the following june. otherwise you're just wasting your time and money.
