I am considering re-applying to medical schools for the next year's cycle. I have used the AMCAS and so my question is: would I have to ask for NEW letters of recommendations? will I have to re-invent my application?

I would appreciate your immediate response,

It would be best if u improve every aspects of ur app and of course get new letters of rec showing what u have been up to this past year. I believe amcas won't leave a copy of ur lors, and u would need to send a new one in, don't know for sure thou. Good luck.

I added letters of recommendation from my work during the year, and I asked my old recommenders to add one or two lines describing how my new work contributed to things they had already said. Check out the thread I just started on the joys of re-applying:

My second cycle of applications I had 4 new letters of rec (more clinical and from new professors in my SMP), I also had a graduate GPA now (from said SMP) that was higher than my undergraduate, and I added 3 new activities on my AMCAS and did some major revisions to the old (I had everything proof-read, too, which I didn't do the first time). In addition, I re-wrote my personal statement.

The only thing I didn't improve was my MCAT score.

I think you need to show them that you have improved your application the second cycle around. Switch around your activites, add new ones, write new descriptions. New letters of rec will let them know that you are continuing to impress people professionally.

Overall just turn it up to 11.

did you apply to med school AFTER the SMP or WHILE IN the SMP???

If one is applying while in the program, when would one get such letters from the SMP professors?

Thanks for your help and cooperation. I ask because I may be reapplying next cycle while in an SMP if I get off one of the waitlists for one of the SMPs I've applied to. Thanks again. 🙂

My failed application cycle was during my SMP. My successful one started right after the SMP. It does help to apply after the SMP, then you have all your grades and letters of rec.
