As an incompetant computer use, can someone please tell me how to change my status from "Senior User" to something more interesting? What sort of criteria do I have to meet?

Sure. Sign in, then at the top of this page you will see a link User CP. Follow it then select Edit Profile. From there you will see an option for Custom User Text. Follow the directions to make your changes then click Submit Modifications.

you have to swear loyalty and your first born child to SDN

The only other thing is that you have to have been a member for 1 month (you're almost there) and have a certain # of posts (can't remember, but I know it isn't over 100, so you're there already).

In other words, do what Stephen said in a few days. 🙂
