A 30yo male with aspirin intoxication. He has no other known PMH or is taking any other meds. We are not sure what he's taking aspirin for (could be one time for pain). I looked at his chart, and there was a D-dimer test ordered. The test came back <220. What's the purpose of the D-dimer test in this patient?

Regards,

Jake

Well, I would think since he ingested a good amount of aspirin they want to find out anything they can about his clotting. Read on

D-dimer measures the hypercoagulability of a patient. Asprin has know to reduce D-dimer.. or change the thrombiotic variables. Read CADET and CURE studies.

D-dimer is the breakdown of the fibrin clot complex. So there is an extremely high number, they can find out what stage the clot is in, something in the clotting stage is going wrong, etc...
