I plan on applying to PT school in 2014. I earned a C- in physics II and have to re-take it. I'm signing up for spring classes soon, so I'm undecided on whether I want to take the same class again at my university, or take it at a community college/4-year nearby after I graduate in spring 2014.

I'm not sure if the community college/4 year will offer physics next summer, so if I don't take physics this spring, then I might not be able to retake the class until after I apply.

Any suggestions? GPA is currently a 3.3 for cum and pre-req, if that matters. I still have several pre-reqs I'm planning on taking, mostly psych/english/stats.

Take it before you graduate for 2 reasons: it will cost less and it will count toward your undergrad gpa (what a lot of pt schools look at). And this reason might not apply, but at my university, you can only do grade replacement if you are still an undergrad. Once you graduate, it remains a C- on your transcript.

Have you thought about summer? I just say this because they are a lot quicker.I took my classes over summer at a CC after I graduated. I did this bc it was a lot cheaper at a CC and after 4 years or a certain amount of hours financial aid runs out. Also depending on where u go to PT school, they will either average or replace repeated grades.

It doesn't actually count for my GPA or units because it's a C-. I just double checked. 🙁 I don't think it'll cost any less, since I have to take a few classes once I graduate regardless.

Yep! That's my dilemma, actually. I already have to take 2/3 classes over summer or during my year off, but I'm not sure if the physics will be offered during summer at the CC or 4-year that's nearby...So I'm not sure if I should just take physics before I graduate or just hope that it's offered over summer before I apply. Would it look super bad if I don't repeat it before I apply?

I think you misunderstood me, yeah PT programs require pre-reqs with grades C and higher, so the C- won't cut it. I'm referring to your transcript and how it affects your cGPA- depending on your school's grade replacement policy, once you graduate, generally schools will not allow you to replace grades from your undergrad record. So if you want to replace it and have the grade excluded, you most likely have to do it during your undergrad. And if you wait, you will have a C- on your transcript as well as your new grade. You probably should research your school's policy.

The reason I mentioned costs is because at my university, once you graduate costs of classes go up big time. You no longer register as undergrad so you pay more. May or may not apply to you.

Retake it ASAP to get rid of that C-. Get at least a C+ the second time. You've seen the material once so it should be somewhat familiar. Take at the university because as the OP said, tuition rates go up if you're a "non-degree" student taking pre-requisites and not working toward a major. The CC will offer less expensive credits only after you graduate.

I understood, but I just reread my response to your original statement and it didn't make much sense. I meant to say that I'm unable to replace the C- on my transcript when I retake it before I graduate. If I had gotten a D+ or lower, I could have replaced the grade and raised my cGPA. I didn't realize that classes might cost more once I graduate. That's unfortunate. 🙁 I'll be sure to look into that, thanks!

Thanks! I think this is what I'll do.
