I thought I should share this with you guys.
I am the first year at NYU. It seems NYU accepted more students in hope that they may not show up, but unfortunately all of them showed up. On the first day of Orientation none of the folders were left uncollected. Anyway therefore NYU offered $44,000 scholarship to anyone who would defer their addmission to the next year, so far I believe there were 30 people who accepted the offer. Anyway this is so stupid and has made many people pissed-off as to why they should have accepted so many people when they do not have the space.
NYU might not be the greatest of all schools, but when it comes to money it is not much more than Boston, penn, tuft and etc, but leaving in this city is priceless and plus you don't have to chase the patients. I would never want to pay so much money and also end up living in a city like Boston (I come from Los Angeles). But don't stay in the dorms, for the same money you can renst a one bedroom in Manhattan, and have your own privacy.
Good luck to all.

44,000 scholarship and free year to do whatever you want? To me, that's like winning the lottery.

but instead of wasting that year doing nothing, you could graduate a year earlier and use that time to make $150K....

NYU is funny. I am an undergrad there the school is rediculously competative and everyone is doing premed. Of course 80 percent of them drop after orgo. I thought it was interesting that NYU accepts more students than they can accomodate. It's the location that makes the school so arrogant. NYC is not bad in fact it's great and I can't think of anywhere else to live. The rush, the lines to get on the elevator it all becomes part of your life. SO I think you guys from LA and other states from West coast should certainly consider the school.

How is it Academically? I have heard some
terrible things about NYU Dental.
Have a great year off.

roster88 - I too am a first year student at NYU and was wondering how you came about the approximate number of students to accept the offer. If the number is in fact around 30, then I am somewhat relieved - this means that we won't have to be crammed together as much. 🙂

My sister went through NYU and NYUCD in their combined 7-year BA-DDS program. She liked the program-- At NYUCD they compressed all the didactics to 1.5 years and the rest is all clinic. NYU does have a very good clinical program; you get exposed to a lot of cases, and the rotations at area hospitals are top-notch; New York City does have some of the busiest hospitals in the country after all.

The only thing my sister didn't like about NYUCD is the overcrowding; she did have to fight for chair time. Other than that, NYUCD has given her a good dental education; these days she is a very successful practitioner who sees very complex cases.

Proof positive that what you get out of NYUCD depends on YOU. New York isn't for everybody-- You have to be a hard-charging type-A personality to succeed because of all the crap you will encounter along the way. I've quoted Ol' Blue Eyes a million times already but I'll do it again-- If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.

Then why doesn't everyone aspire to go to UOP. It's the only 3 year school.

Cramming everything into a 3 year program is very intense! They don't get summers off, they start months ahead of other dental schools and the tuition is quite expensive compared to a state school. UOP isn't for everyone but there are a lot of people that do choose uop b/c you get out earlier and start making the $$ earlier...

Don't most dental students only get one summer off?

They start near mid-July. Don't most dental schools start in late August?

And UOP's second year is prettty easy from what I have heard.

Yeah but UOP is def not famous for getting very many people into specialties, and form what ive heard a lot of students go into GRP.
Not to mention they dont have other options to do things such as dual programs, MPH, MBA, PHD, etc. Which can be done during the 3rd and 4th year with are a litt more slack.
