DNA and RNA are always read 5' to 3' even if the 5 and 3 are not explicitly written


If on an mRNA strand, you have
AUGAAA

Wouldn't the anticodon read
UUUCAU

The aniticodon is a series of nucletide bases on the base of a tRNA molecule that are complementary to the codon on the mRNA transcript. Codons and anticodons are tripletts so for the mRNA sequence AUGAAA the anticodon complementary to one codon (AUG) would be UAC and the other(AAA) would be UUU

So anticodons are read 3'-5' by convention?

The ribosome/trna reads the mrna in the 5' to 3' direction, so if it's written as
AUGAAA ---->
assuming it's 5' to 3'
the anti codon on the t-rna would read

UACUUU ---->
