Hey everyone,

Ive been working on the RC section and it seems fairly brutal. Im following Kaplan's techniques of scanning each passage by paragraph while writing down topic phrases and keywords. Despite this, it seems that I can barely make it through the first half of the 3rd and final passage before running out of time. Im barely reading the passages and yet still not enough time. I was wondering what your guys take on this is. What were your experiences like using the Kaplan strategy and what other strategies did you use to help you get through this ridiculous section?

Thanks for any help!!

Hi,

I didn't use Kaplan's long outline procedure, I read the first passage entirely, then answered the questions. I did, however, write key details on my paper along with their respective paragraph numbers. For the remainder, I noticed that since I was running out of time, I would read about 50% of the passage, read the questions, and search for the answers. It worked pretty well for me, but I don't recommend using that method for the entire section.

My advice to you is to read some difficult science journals and scholarly research articles that have large words that you may not understand.
Read a few passages a day, summarize them after you read them and practice your reading. I ran our of time with 5 questions to go on the RC and still got a 21 on that section. The key is to get the questions correct. I skimmed through the passages on the real thing to get an idea of what the passage was about, then I went right to the questions.

Skim through the entire passage, then start answering questions. They tend to follow the passage in order but not always. You're bound to get a few questions where the answers are located in the same general area, and you will remember where in the passage these answers are located.

Plus you may already know a couple things just from science courses.

Don't do the keywords/topic thing. Takes too long.
