Hey all,

CA-1 here trying to learn more about anesthesia jobs and what to expect after residency. Any good resources that describe the difference between private-practice vs. multispecialty medical group vs. AMC vs. HMO companies vs. University/academic vs. other types of practices? I also hear terms like RVU's and payor mix and would like to educate myself on the significance of these things. Any reading would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Real life people - look to your CA-3s, they have likely all signed contracts by now (or are entering fellowships), talk with them about their experiences. Reach out to recent alumni, especially in regions that you might be interested in.

We had a number of “returner” faculty who came after many years in PP, they were fantastic sources of information as well. When I got my contract, I didn’t hit up a lawyer I hit up a couple of these faculty mentors - I didn’t want to spend $800 for something non-negotiable, but wanted advice as whether it was reasonable.

SDN can be helpful but also quite toxic when people discuss individual jobs. Not sure why, but a few burned-out folks love to dominate the job threads and nit-pick those seeking applicants. The big picture ideas were helpful, though - there are a few threads on what to look for (and what to avoid!) in gasworks postings.
