For the philosophy readings on the MCAT, can anyone who scored well on the section (10+) tell me if it's a good idea to read works from Hume, Locke, Plato etc or is this just going overboard?

If you are interested in reading it go ahead. If you are doing it for the purpose of trying to raise verbal score this will probably not help much, and may even be counterproductive. You don't want to use outside knowledge when answering verbal questions. Its important not to get the philosophies of each person affecting your perception of the authors POV in verbal passages. You are better off doing a bunch of practice passages.

Instead of trying to increase your scores by doing a lot of different things, you will probably be better off really doing postgame review. If you look at others who have posted after doing well, many stress the importance of this, which is often neglected.

I read philosophy on the side and it probably has overall increased my verbal comprehension since it's very dense material and non-science. However, even when passages came up about philosophers I've read about, the fact that I was familiar with the material actually didn't help in answering the questions. All the answers are in the passages. No outside info is helpful, only skills you have obtained from outside reading
