Hi.

I am preparing for DAT this summer.

Are there past real DAT tests available just like '10 real SATs' in high school?

What test prep books do you guys recommend?

I would appreciate any input.

There is a sample DAT in the registration bulletin for the test. I found it to be most similar to the actual test of all prep materials. They were available at my school's health career office. If you can't find it, I am sure you can get one from the ADA. Oh, and if you want my $.02, take the Kaplan class. It is expensive ~$1,000, but it does a good job preparing you for your test.

I thought the sample test was much much easier than the actual test. Kaplan is only good if you do not have self-discipline and need someone to push you to study. You could speng under $200 in prep material and do the job yourself. Top-score is essential as is the big Kaplan book. These are the only two I used and helped a lot. people will chime in with other material.

If you have a solid GPA I would go with studying on your own. If you have a weaker GPA, you may need someone to explain the material to you and the kaplan course will be helpful

I disagree. Kaplan's classes are so-so, but the major advantage that Kaplan offers is loads of practice material that you simply can't find elsewhere. If you take Kaplan and have self-discipline, you have a myriad of practice quizzes and tests at your disposal. You can use these and prepare way above and beyond those who take Kaplan just to get a kick in the arse to study.

It is absolutely possible to do well without Kaplan, and SDN members and others do it all the time. But, I think Kaplan makes it a lot easier to do well if you take advantage of all of their materials.

Sorry I get so excited, but I'm a bit of a rabid Kaplan fan. 😉

As per above, I highly recommend Kaplan's course. Other good materials are Kaplan's book (the big blue one you can find in a bookstore or order off of Amazon - if you take Kaplan's course they'll give you a copy), TopScore Pro (3 sample computerized tests), and the Barron's book (only for PAT, though). For the sciences and practice tests, Barron's is so chock full of mistakes and extraneous material that it can be highly misleading for your studying.

Hope this helps!

I agree with Typo. The kaplan course is useless if I want to say. However, their test bank is really helpful. The cons is the price which costs $1,000.
The second good test resource is TopScore CD. There are three really exams in the CD, but its PAT part is much easier than the real exam. For all other parts, I would say they are very similar with the real test.

If you are interested in Kaplan course, make sure to tell me you are the member of pre-health club or association in your school. Most of the test center will give you 10% discount, which you can use to apply one more school. 🙂

Be sure to get Kaplan's review book and study it SEVERAL times before the exam. Compare and contrast the data you in in the textbooks and write them down in you Kaplan book.

I agree:

I did not take the Kaplan, but did study the "BIG Kaplan book" and it was sufficient.

I scored a 21 on the sciences, and a 19 AA.
