Yeah, but this is more fun.

Actually, I suppose it could be real, but who has ever heard of a skydiving republican with a 43T?

No way.

Says hes been a paramedic for 4 years (volunteering for emergency rescue squad, anyways). He's 20 now, so that means he would have been 16 when he got his paramedic license. Not possible; you have to be 18 and have a high school diploma to sit for EMT exam, let alone paramedic...........

pretty funny one though. whats amazing is the level of detail he goes into... i mean, i give em an A for effort and originality.

2007 application year. I think he might be looking ahead to next year already. Who knows, he might be the type of person to write that MCAT score because that's what he *plans* on getting :meanie:

Do you have to be 18? Maybe it varies by state, or they've changed it or something, because I got my EMT cert when I was 17.

Considering that no one scored a 43 in 2005 or 2004 for that matter (at least according to AAMC) then I'm going to have to say no to this one. If he lowered one of his sections by a point it just might be possible, but he obviously didn't do his research.

Well, no that's not true. Our own Q here scored a 43. However, the percentage is so low that it rounds to 0%.

I don't see anything in that profile that jumps out at me as farce. What is it that you think warrants a report?

If xaelia is curious, I'm sure he could check some of the details available to him. But I really don't see what's so fake about the profile. Sure, it could be fake... Any of the profiles on there could be. It's a faith-based system.

There's an SDN member from UVa who had pretty similar stats actually (you can find his MDapps profile pretty easily). He's an MSII now.

And hey, if Q maintained a profile, a bunch of people would probably think it's fake. 😛

If this guy's profile is real, I think it would be pretty crappy for him to be informed by the administrator that a bunch of people reported the profile as problematic.

i like the answer choices. reminds me of stephen colbert.

"george bush... great president or the greatest president?"

I was certified at 17 in VA as an EMT-B . . . for basic all you have to be is 16 by the time the class starts (in VA). However, I still think it's a fake, I feel like I would have heard about this guy . . .

He doesn't actually say he's been a paramedic for 4 years. He says he's certified as a paramedic, and that he's been a "volunteer rescue squad member for 4 years." Seems possible to me. In any case it looks to me like this is somebody who's planning on applying next year. The MCAT may just be what he hopes to get (hah). Probably just an overly eager pre-med (but who among us hasn't been guilty of that at some point? 😛)

The 2007 application year was what really made me question it. So even if the rest is true, he technically can't have applied to those schools yet, and so it is fake at least in that regard.

Actually, Virginia allows 16 year-olds to take the EMT-B test; a high school diploma is only required for ALS classes.

i voted prematurely thinking that you were still talking about that chick from the new york fashion institute that scored really high on the mcats, did runway modeling for big designers, and eventually matriculated at harvard.

Well there wasn't much of a choice either way you voted, so...

One of our other SDNers put his/her profile up nearly half-a-year before AMCAS could be filed with a listing of the schools to which he/she intended to apply.

Edit: This SDNer took the MCAT a year before the app cycle.

Still not flag-worthy in my opinion.

Okay, fair enough. Xaelia can decide. I just wanted to see if other people found it to be equally dubious.

tacrum is correct; a couple of people score 43 each time. lorelei scored 43 in April 2004, and I did it in Aug. 2004. According to the AAMC (I did write and ask), in Aug. 2004, there were eight 42s and two 43s. No one scored 44 or 45 during that administration. I didn't see anyone post about scoring 43 in Aug. 2005, but I seem to remember someone posting that they scored 43 in Apr. 2005. Maybe that is his profile.

Good point...it would be better if AAMC listed the scores by the number of people who received it in addition to the percentage. Still, the odds seem slim to me. Almost sounds too good to be true. If it is true, however, congrats to that guy. It sounds like he has an amazing application. Of course...he doesn't have any research or publications listed. 😉

I didn't even think about that when I wrote the title. 👍

If I make a profile, I'll tell Xaelia that it's mine. 😛 B/c you're right: I'll have a 43 MCAT coupled with my 0.00 GPA, and that's gonna look totally fake.

You keep saying 0.00 gpa, but you only get a 0 for Fs. You can't get it for no-grades. Quit trying to bring yourself down to a merely mortal level. The worst you can say about your ugrad gpa is "N/A"

QofQuimica said:
If I do that, mdapplicants concludes that I have a 0.00 GPA. 😳

Awwwww

Do the evals have any way of being converted to numbers? Don't they have problems with alumni getting into grad schools?

Actually you don't have to have a diploma or be 18 to sit for the EMT exam...I had 3 highschool students (all were 17) in my class who took it...however, that profile is total bs.

No. There is no grading option whatsoever. It's strictly P/F. Somehow, this is not a big problem with grad schools like it is with med schools. When I applied to grad school, I sent copies of all my science evals, and they accepted me first, then flew me out to visit (at their expense, not mine). Of course, I came out of undergrad with 2.5 years of lab experience, so that might have something to do with it.

He spelled trauma "trama." Heavens, what is our educational system coming to when Doogie Howser can't even spell "trauma" correctly?

Yeah 2007 seems to be a red flag IMO.
Already has all the schools picked out?
I already have all my schools picked out....and I'm not applying for at least another two years. What's so wrong with that?

By the way, that's a definitely fake profile

I say plausible but highly unlikely. If it's not an outright lie, it could be an exageration.

Here's a good question: Where/how did you stumble across this profile?

I made it up because I am a troll. 😉

The major red flag for me is the statement that he volunteered in a nonmedical capacity with Doctors Without Borders. They only except professionals with certain skillsets as volunteers, not joe shmoe college student.

Yeah, no research or publications!?! There's no way this kid could get into medical school even given all the other stuff is true.

you know, the problem with that is that you can't state why you're reporting it. i reported a profile for some guy who stated that he had already been accepted to osucom (applying this year) even though osucom doesn't even start interviewing until next week. perhaps he selected the wrong year, but his info was wrong and should be fixed. i reported it, and nothing happened, which is understandable because it looks like a very legit profile aside from that whole osucom thing.

here's the profile.

The most obvious clue to me is the EMT-Paramedic certification. Getting that is a pretty hardcore year-long commitment AFTER you have already got your EMT-Basic certification. Given the level of commitment to other things in the profile, and the person's age, I would say that the profile is 100% false - even based solely on considering the EMT-P claim.

By the way, "Probably not" is winning. Be bold people!

I'm not voting, b/c I think it could be the guy who posted that he got a 43 last April. I also chose to wait a year before applying, so I don't think it means anything that the profile is entering 2007. He might just be planning to apply to those schools. Having been a victim of the shoot first and ask questions later troll-bashers myself, I tend to want to err on the side of giving the guy the benefit of the doubt. 🙄

I think you are taking this too seriously. The odds are very much against this being a legitimate profile. That was my point. That, and I felt like starting a thread. 🙂

It's not a question of being serious or not serious. I don't really care all that much one way or the other concerning that profile and whether it's real. What I'm objecting to is that sometimes SDNers are a little too trigger-happy. *My* point is that we should give people the benefit of the doubt, and assume that they are telling the truth unless we have a concrete reason to believe otherwise. It isn't very nice to have a bunch of punks telling you that you're a troll and a liar when they don't even know you. So again, I'd rather err on the side of believing him, and if I'm later proven wrong, fine. But the burden of proof belongs to the accusers; this is the US, not France.

Sheesh it's a poll on SDN, not a trial by jury.

Aye, and a rather biased one at that. 😉

Yeah, that's true, but that's why it's funny (well I thought it was funny). Besides, the "probably not" option leaves room for the slight possibility it's actually a real profile.
