ok this question that comes on almost every interview(why dentistry). The question seems easy, however its hard just to say one sentences about it. My friend had his interview last week and she said that it was so hard to give a short and quick answer and it seemed that the interview didnt want that much talk so:::

In one sentence can anyone or everyone just say a sentence very precise why dentistry without bla bla---

you should be able to come up with something if this is something you REALLY want to do...

dude...say it in as many words as you need to...dont just limit yourself to one sentence. BTW it never is just ONE sentence..there should be several reasons and soem kind of quick explanation.

i.e. (not a relevant example..but)

"I like to dance because I love to move my body." "I enjoy grinding with girls and just being able to move freely."

One sentence is ridiculous. Quite possibly your friend, who is half-man half-woman, didn't have a good answer or a good reason for dentistry, which turned off the interviewers and made them not want to talk much. I don't know if interviewers are looking for a "quick answer." I started off by talking about my pre-dental club that got me into it and then went on from there. I certainly used more than one sentence, and probably used 4-5 minutes. You're not gonna chronologically list each event that led you to dentistry, but it better sound reasonable, genuine and honest.

Seriously... did anyone get in who answered this question with one sentence??
Peterngu's approach is the best IMO...

I talked about attending drawing classes that I attended when I was younger and how I really enjoyed working with my hands. I also mentioned that I really enjoyed learning about biology and chemistry while I was in middle school. Furthermore, being able to have meaningful conversations with my friends and family was something I really enjoyed. After going to the dental office when I was seven, I really valued the trust I had gained with my dentist and a couple years later, I realized that all of my interests were connected together into a profession that I can practice for the rest of my life. I even did shadowing and dental research just to be sure that dentistry suited my interests.

Well not one sentence but all of my answers were pretty short (less than 30 seconds long).

You are an ALLSTAR! congrats on all those acceptances to great schools!

... maybe our approach isnt the best... 😕

It's a good career with a lot of job options from small business autonomy to education and research, interpersonally gratifying, intellectually challenging, and rewarding as well as allowing for some great flexibility.

But that's such a generic answer, it wouldn't impress anyone. Having done student interviews, I really don't care how long you take to answer this question cause if you are dancing around the point, I'll stop you and ask you to get to it. I know this is a hard question for a lot of people, and I think most interviewers in general feel the same way. We don't hold it against you unless you just can't say anything the even seems remotely true.

so you can go on talking about 4 min. for that question.

Yes, this question can be a couple of minutes to hours long if you have a lot of experience. I would highlight a few things that you like about the field (along the lines djefferyt started his post with) supported with your individual experiences. So, for example, you can say that when you shadowed with Dr. X, you enjoyed the relationship she had with her patients and enjoyed talking to them yourself. Or something like your experiences with art/working with your hands and your experiences with science that made you want a carreer that could combine the two.

Be generic to get your bullet points across, but color them with your personal experience. Shouldn't be more than 5 mins long, and you'd be suprised how long 5 mins actually is. Good luck!

In short, I chose Temple over UMDNJ since I preferred to stay in the Philly area. I chose Temple over Penn cuz it's cheaper and I def would've gone to Penn if I didn't wasn't accepted into Temple. Overall Penn dental is a nice school but overhyped and too expensive.

Just curious why Temple? UMDNJ and PENN sound NICE!
