Hi! I am currently a 3rd year medical student at a DO school. I took the COMLEX I, but since I would like to maybe go into something more competitive, I am planning to take both the COMLEX and USMLE for Step 2. My question is: can I also take the USMLE Step 1 at this time? I didn't take it earlier, which is my own fault. But is it too late to take it now that Ive started my 3rd year?

If anyone knows, please share the info!

Also, the competitive field I may want to enter is Radiology, and since DO radiology programs are limited, I want to expand my options. And for the record, I had NO interest in this field my first 2 years, and therefore found no need to take the USMLE. It's really funny how rotations can make you change everything you thought you would like! 😛

You can definitely take usmle step 1 whenever you like. Just make sure you buckle down, study hard, and take some nbmes/uworld self assessment beforehand to see where you're at.

You've already done a Rads rotation this early in 3rd year??

I ?think you have to take step 1 (and pass) before you will be allowed to take step 2 CK. Not sure though. You might want to check.

You can honestly take the Step 2 without taking the Step 1. The only time that you will need to take Step 1 before anything, i if you want to take Step 3, in that situation, you have to take step 1 and 2 and pass them before you are allowed to take step 3.
