Hi everyone!

So, I recently graduated from a four year university with a bachelors of arts in International Relations and have finished all my med school pre-req courses. I'm going to be applying for med school during the next cycle (June 2011) and I was hoping people could give me some advice for ways to become a competitive candidate given my current stats.

Overall GPA: 3.7

BCPM GPA: 3.4 (I've been looking into postbac programs, but I simply don't have the money for it and am planning to take community college courses in January. Is that unwise?)

MCAT: 24R but I'm retaking it. I was stupid and took it when I wasn't ready.

ECs: hospital volunteer work, two published research papers, strong leadership positions for three years, good LORs

Is it an unlikely thing for me to try and get into med school next cycle? What should I do to become a competitive candidate?

Thank you so much in advance!

I would say your chances at a DO program are not bad at all, even with your current stats.

As for community college classes, I wouldn't recommend them as most professional schools don't like to see science classes being taken at non- 4 year university. ( I have a family member who is on an admission committee)

I think retaking your mcat would be wise and give you a much better chance at MD programs if thats what your aiming for. I recommend the exam kracker series really highly especially their extra problems books and verbal passages book. I would also say applying early and having a quick turn around period will also GREATLY improve your chances.

Good luck!!! :luck:

need to break 30 for md and at least 26 for do, but maybe
you'll get some do interviews with the 24

if you want to take additional science classes enroll
in summer programs or regular courses at a 4 year school
no community college

shadow, research, anything with a good patient care or
medical related activity.

as mentioned above, no CC courses. since you said you've done your pre-reqs, you don't need a post-bac. and you don't really need GPA repair either. if you must take more science courses, take upper-level ones at a four year university. but make sure you stomp them; any more B's at this point will only hurt you.

The MCAT is the biggie, it's got to be retaken and it's got to come up. do what you have to do until your practice exams are coming out at 32+ (most people come down a few points from their highs on test day)

latest reasonable retest date is July 2011, make sure AMCAS is submitted by then too.
