Ok guys, I really need some help here. I am 19, graduated HS in 2012 with a 3.8 GPA and I'm looking to be a neurosurgeon but this might change but i am definitely looking into becoming a surgeon. Im going to skip all of the details about why I havent started college because its lengthy haha so i will get right down to the point and if you would like to hear more, just let me know. But I am kind of at a stand still here. I Have no one to talk to about college because I have graduated high school already and no one in my family has went to college or anything. So can someone just give me a push in the right direction? I literally have no clue where to start. So any advice would be GREATLY Apprecated! But please refrain from being a jerk. I am just trying to get the ball rolling now 🙂 Thanks so much in advance!

I think you forgot the mention what exactly your problem is. Or is the problem the fact that you are not in college?

Is this a financial issue?

First I would look at colleges in your area and begin to apply to the ones you are interested in. I am not sure whether you want to attend or a community college to start or jump into a 4-year institution.

I'd check out the hSDN subforum for more info regarding college applications.

Ok, here is the issue. After I graduated HS, i went straight into a university studying software. About 3 months into the semester, my dad was diagnosed with brain cancer. I tried to get the college to work with me and try to take the classes home with me and get my work mailed or whatever i had to do, but they said that they couldnt work with me at all, but i still had to come home and be with my dad and help with everything. Long story short, returning home resulted in a failure of all of the classes. I am almost positive that i still have my financial aid and such, but my GPA is a big issue Right now. I didnt wanna tell this story because i didnt want you guys to think that the only reason that i was becoming a surgeon was because of my dad.

I think you should've withdrew from the courses instead of failing all of them.

Most institutions have a form you complete in order to return to the institution, and they will review it to determine if you left for valid reasons before allowing you to return.

If you're trying to stay at home, you could look into community colleges around your area.

I did withdraw. It still resulted in a Withdrawal with failure.

I'd mention this story in your PS in the future when you apply for medical school. This story here is the main source of your passion and inspiration for medicine, although it's emotional and personal. Hopefully, your dad's much better now.

As someone else mentioned, you should've withdrawn from all your classes as you have a legitimate reason for doing so. It seems that your university is insensitive to your concerns and I'd probably transfer to a much more student-friendly college. And because it was only one semester, your GPA could be repaired in the future.

Ok thanks for the advice! Now this may be a stupid question, but how do i go about seeing if my local cc has a pre med program? because i have been looking on there site and i cant find anything about it.

Try calling the school. I'd recommend you take some pre-reqs at the CC then transfer after a year to a 4-year institution/university to finish your degree.

I have been thinking a lot about doing this. Now that i have the time since dad is finally doing better, i can get everything lined up and going.

Keep in mind that even if your school doesn't have a "pre-med program", surely the advisers will know what you need to take at this time or you can easily figure it out yourself. All the information you will ever get from any college's pre-med program can be found within this forum...and much, much more.

This exactly. 👍👍

I'd find out exactly what "withdrawing with failure" means before I make any long term plans.
