I have been accepted to 2 top east coast dental schools, including UPENN, for this fall but due to an unforseen family emergency I have to move to Portland, Oregon.
SO
1. Will it look bad when I apply this year that I was admitted to multiple schools and still did not attend??????
2. will i get a decent shot at OHSU with the following stats: 3.7 gpa (3.5 sci) from top liberal arts school, 19/15 academic/pat on the DAT and 4 yrs work exp with 1 year research??

I am really stressed coz I worked hard to get admitted but it seems I will not be able to start this year. thanks for your inputs...

Redi--

First off I hope everything is alright, and wish you all the best.

I believe that schools understand that certain things come before anything else, and will understand that postponing dental school by a year (depending on the situation) isn't that big of a deal. You should definitely call the schools and explain the situation to the Director of Admissions, and tell them what you are thinking. In my opinion being straightforward and honest wins them over. Bring the school into the decision and let them know. I know for certain the people at Penn are compassionate and wouldn't hold it against you. But speaking to them will help you in your quest to reapply.
In regards to your score, it can't hurt to retake it cos your PAT is a lil low. But if you got into Penn, Im sure other schools will look at you and your situation. So if you retake it good, if not i don't think it'll hurt you.

Wish you all the best.

have you asked the schools to defer for admission next fall?

Some schools will allow deferrment, some school will not,

but ask that first, before you have to go through the whole process of reapplying..

good luck

Hi redicon1:

As for OHSU, I know they are pretty keen on having their own residents apply. Since Oregon attracts many people due to their "no sales tax" lifestyle many people move there and try to apply. However, they are very strict that you live there a year or more to claim residency. In that time you must work there and pay taxes there.

I would try to ask for a deferment. PENN people are very nice and they should not hold it against you. However, if you reapply you will be facing, most likely, a more qualified group since dental admissions is getting more competitive. In this year you will have to retake your DAT's, a 19/15 will not cut it for OHSU. Especially, the 15. 19's are average nowadays, 15 is way low for OHSU. My friend in portland with a 19/22 and a 3.4 gpa did not get into OHSU and they told him that he needed to bring his academic up to a 20 across.

I wish you the best. However, it would be cool if you could join us at PENN this year.

thanks very much for yr replies. I appreciate yr concern.
as it turns out I don't have to move to oregon this summer and will be starting d-school this fall.

Redicon!

That;s great news, and I'm glad everything worked out!!
Which school are you gonna attend? I hope it's Penn. If it is, join our thread and we'll bring you up to speed!

Redicon,

I don't know squat about dental admissions (as you can see in my posts), but it I'll use common sense to piece it together:

If you've already been accepted once, then you can do it again. That should be reassurance for you: knowing that you have what it takes. Go for it! And hope all is well with the fam. Take care. 😉

Doh, I didnt' see that Redicon already plans on attend Oregon. HaH! 😳
