I am dreading the start of 2nd year, I dont know how i managed to make it thru first year and now round 2 is about to start. I dont want to feel like im giving up though. Has anyone in your class dropped out yet? If so what were their reasons?

Yea bro, almost 50% of my class dropped out. 2nd year is gonna suck. I go to a Caribbean school, so I guess that's the norm, though :scared:

Yea brah, it's a tough world out there. Should have went to optometry school like my friend since he said med school would be too hard *sigh*

Depending on how your school's curriculum is set up, 2nd year will likely be more intense but much more interesting. Hopefully the more interesting material will make things more bearable.

Just hang on 1 more year!!!!!!!!! I was miserable the first 2 years of med school.....Clinicals are soo much better than preclinical years.

Yeah second year is better than first dw first is by far the worst. The only thing that rlly sucks is step 1 and studying for it but to be honest middle first year in the winter months was worse.. At least for me.. Right around the time we were running full steam and the "omg I'm a med student " feeling rubbed off.

Ehh I dont know, I thought both sucked in their own special ways. The months of May and June blow like you couldn't even imagine...step 1 is unlike anything you have ever done. I have never seen my friends so stressed.

Good news is third year is a million times better. If you are use to having a job then third year will feel pretty natural. You show up, do your best, and go home. As long as you do this you will not fail...my stress load is next to nothing compared to 1st/2nd year.

Well, unless you fail the shelves...

It's more than a normal job because it's longer hours and you have to study in the night time when you come home, at least the last half of the rotation you need to.

If you don't do the intense studying at night during at least the last half of the rotation, then you'll do mediocre on the shelf. If you want to honor, you have to do well on the shelf. Attending evals are too subjective to rely on to help your grade and the shelves are still at least 1/3rd of your total grade.

Depends on what kinds of jobs you've had.

Read the rest of my post, Mass o' Poo :beat:. I said with the nighttime studying it's definitely worse than a normal job. 10-12 hours + a few hours of studying each day is definitely worse than any normal job. Half of my last rotation was like that, while the other half was still 10-12 hours but didn't do any studying after.

My shelf isn't 1/3 of my grade. Its 25% of my grade.

My school had weekly exams all of 1st/2nd year...having only 1 test every 6-8 weeks is hands-down awesome. Plus you are learning throughout the rotation, its not like you have to study to learn everything.

Gotcha. At my school it's at least 35% of the grade. I think IM might be 45%.

And also I don't know if you have taken any shelf exams yet, but generally what you see during the rotation only accounts for maybe 1/3-1/2 of the shelf exam content. In the hospitals you're seeing the most common things over and over again, while on the shelf they focus just as much on the zebras as they do on the common things. You definitely miss a huge chunk of learning for the shelf if you don't do the recommended readings and qbanks.

Actually 3rd year was the most stressful for some of my friends. I think it depends what kind of person you are, mostly how good you are at getting good evals. And there is really no break between 3rd and 4th year. You might get a break from rotations but there is just too much to do to take time off. Step 2's, aways, figuring out what you want to do for the rest of your life, personal statement, etc...
