Hello all,
I'm going through a quarter-life crisis and I am in desperate need of advice right now. I am a biology major who entered college from high school with a lot of AP credits and so I was immediately a sophomore.
I want to become a dentist, but I am not sure if I even have a chance because I received a B in bio 1 and bio one lab. But then I got a B- in bio 2 and a C in Bio 2 lab (which we call animal diversity)
My first year is now at a close. My GPA has now fallen to a 2.91 from a 2.95. I have no idea what my science gpa is, probably lower.
MY QUESTION IS: what should I do? I still have chemistry to take which is hard and then physics will be harder still.
1. Double major to raise my gpa?
2. Give up on dental school completely? Being a dentist is really the only thing I want to do.

HELP!

You need to do a few things, IMO:

1. Recognize that you have dozens of credit hours to take before your GPA is set in stone. You are nowhere NEAR done, and it would be foolish to give up now.

2. You probably need to be in better communication with teachers, advisors and whatever support network your university provides. Most have one, and most struggling students don't access it.

3. You need to realize that school is a job and treat it as such. You aren't learning the material and need to study more, or study better. If you have extraordinary circumstances, then that's fine. There are things to be done about that. If you're a freshman without a job who doesn't want to study, then it's time to change.

Thanks for your advice. Would I still be able to get into dental with a B and B- in biology classes, though?

What other classes have you been taking with the bios? My best advice would be to not give up, buckle down, and study harder next year. Perhaps you were just caught by surprise while entering college. As long as you have an upward trend, I think you should have a chance. Plus you have the DAT which can turn you application around. Definitely find some tutors and visit your professors during office hours. That's what I did when I struggled.

Of course! There have been people who have gotten C's & W's but still got in. Don't trip. Just try harder. 🙂

You seem like you put yourself in rush.

i know my advice might sound silly/cheesy. but calm the hell down. just calm down and analyize the situation.

I sometimes end up just like you. feel like everything is closed. when this happens to me i just pause and change my angle.

again, it sound cheesy and stupid, but do it.

First of all.
Chillllll
i received b-/b for intro bio
I had similar concerns but worked out in the end. So you can do it too

You're fine...you have so much time to bring up your GPA. So much time that so many graduates would kill for because they have a low GPA and it costs more money/time to fix it.

Just focus on school 100% and get A's with the occasional B from here out and you'll be fine.

You need a 3.5+ to be competitive. All you gotta do is figure out why you are not successful at getting good grades and work on that. Simple, right? 😉

FYI I had a terrible semester when I got a B- in Genetics and a C in Physiology and I still got into Penn this year. And, I was an international student. Maybe we have to get a little messed up before we step up--- From Grey's Anatomy
