I have about a 3.3 (did poorly first semester freshman year) and have probably a 3.5 or so in psychology. My last semester I got straight A's in all my psych classes & labs except experimental psych (5 credits, really hard) where I got an AB. I have one semester working in a lab, but will continue in the fall and spring as I was abroad last semester. I also have a position in a club designed to remove stigma surrounding mental health issues, have volunteered at a student crisis center for the last 2 years, and had an unpaid "internship" at a locked psychiatric ward my last summer, and am now spending this summer working with children in a service organization.

I have a great recommendation from a professor I have had for 2 semesters and have gotten to know, and a good one from my research lab head, but don't know who I could use for a 3rd academic one.

I am starting to think I won't get into any decent clinical PHD program. I haven't even taken the GRE yet but have been studying for a few months and think I could do pretty well if I took it in mid-September. I could take also take the test in August and one in September if that makes more sense.... What do people think?

I was also offered the chance to apply for a job as a TA in a psych class if I took a year off, where I could further work in a lab, grow my network, and work in psych.

Anyway, I'm curious how I stand up in the bigger scheme and what people would recommend? Do I stand no chance at good programs and would a year off serve my needs?

I believe it takes about 2 weeks to get your GRE scores back. Maybe a little bit less. So no, that is not too late if your applications are due November/December. What is important is that you give yourself enough time to study.

I just edited my whole post, but I will keep this in mind. Thanks!

How much research experience do you have? Published papers? Conference presentations?

The only research I have done is in the lab, they are getting it published but my name isn't individually on it. 0 conference presentations.

I think your research experience may be a little weak. You said only 3 semesters by the time you apply, right? If you can spend time getting more, that would strengthen your application the most.

If I apply in the fall, I'll just be finishing up my 2nd semester. I just applied for two more labs so if I got into one, I'd have 3 in total. If I took a year off from actual school, I could get at the least 5 semesters as well as a TA position.

I just posted this if you could check it out.
