I applied this cycle and received 5 II, waitlisted at all of them (FIU, UM Miller, USF, UCF, Nova MD). I graduated 2019 from FIU. I have a 3.79 GPA and 512 MCAT. I know that there is a chance I could get off a waitlist but I'm already preparing to reapply for next cycle. I believe that the schools that I applied to out-of-state were out of my reach (Boston U, NYU, Johns Hopkins, U Chicago, Albert Einstein, Emory, SUNY Downstate, Northwestern) and none of them offered an II.

I was wondering if you could help me find target schools (both MD and DO) based on my stats that are a better fit for me, so that I don't have as many pre-II R's next cycle.

Extracurriculars (900+): Peer tutoring, study abroad, volunteer for research, mentoring program

Volunteering (255 Hours): Hospital, health fairs

Research (800+): Child motor development lab, posters and publication

Paid clinical research (5000): Have been working as a research assistant and now research coordinator for 5 years

Please let me know which schools would be better for next cycle

Honestly with 5 interviews and waitlists (all in-state), I wouldn't be that disappointed. Any one of those could turn into an offer, so be prepared. You obviously had enough to attract your in-state programs where you would have had your best chances anyway. If you had to reapply, I would include DO programs on the list rather than necessary expand your net with MD programs, but that's up to you. From your interviewing, you should have some connections with students you met, so keep up with them and make sure they give you some assurances of how many students do come off the waitlists. Otherwise really tighten up your interviewing skills for the next round.

Reapply to all the schools you received interview invites. It seems like you got love in Florida (which makes sense), so I would consider adding more schools in the south. Look at Louisiana, Georgia, SC, etc.

Since you received invites clearly something is right about your application. I would work on your interview skills since that's where you seemed to get hung-up this time around.

Finally, I would encourage you to really consider if your application is different this time around and consider taking a year to bolster your app. As someone who successfully reapplied, you will get asked at EVERY interview what has changed and how you are a better applicant. They want to see growth which is hard to accomplish in the few months between now and when AMCAs reopens.

Thank you for the response, I didn’t apply to any DO schools last time and was wondering what schools I should target? And yes I definitely will work on my interview skills

Thanks for the response!

I have considered delaying a reapplication but I don’t see what I can do differently in that time to really improve my application

I'll see if @Faha and @Goro have DO or other school suggestions for you given the information you have provided.

Engage in more service to others less fortunate than yourself.
I recommend the following:

U Toledo
U VM
Pitt
Miami
St. Louis
Albany
Albert Einstein
Rush
Rosy Franklin
Wayne State
MCW
NYMC
VCU
EVMS
Wake Forest
Jefferson
Temple
Tufts
Drexel
Creighton
George Washington
Georgetown
Emory
Tulane
Dartmouth
Loyola
Netter
Oakland-B
Western MI
Seton Hall
Your state school(s).
Nova MD
TCU/UNT
Uniformed Services University/Hebert (just be aware of the military service commitment)

Any DO program. I can't recommend Nova, Wm Carey, BCOM, ICOM and LUCOM, for different reasons. MSUCOM? Read up on Larry Nasser and you decide. LMU has an accreditation warning, which concerns me. CalHS is too new and appears to be too limited in rotations sites. UIW refuses to post their Boards scores, which is fishy.

Thank you so much!! This is a big help

Your stats and extracurriculars don't seem that bad. I would either self-evaluate or get someone to help you evaluate your application and your interview skills. Good luck getting in.
