DO M4 unmatched, graduating. went for surgical sub this cycle. rotated with an anesthesiologist after the match and realized its everything I wanted from my surgical sub but nicer people, better lifestyle, and I love the high acuity situations that occasionally happen. Do I have any shot as a reapplicant? If so, chances at west coast?

Step 1 217-219, step 2 239-244, level 1 585-590, level 2 600-605
mostly Honors in 3rd year
8-9 pubs in surgical fields with at least 2-3 more on the way
lots of leadership experience

Plenty of people see the light from surgery and surgical sub. One of my favorite attending did a few years of residency as an ENT then switched.

Give your surgical sub a good try. Can’t be easy to get in. If then you’re sure then jump ship. The easiest way maybe staying at your own institution if they also have an anesthesia residency.

The short answer is yes. The long answer is you need to apply broadly including the midwest and lower tier programs. As a re-applicant matching is harder and as a DO with low step 1 and mediocre step 2 scores the odds of matching may not be great at a midtier program. You need to apply to at least 80 programs and if any are in the top 20 forget about them.

While this may seem harsh it is the reality today. You need to get good letters from attending, academic level Anesthesiologists. I would suggest doing some research in the field you will be trying to match into.

If you do the research year at a midtier program which accepts DOs with your Step scores I see no reason why they won't offer you spot. Good Luck.
