Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on which schools to apply to. I just retook my MCAT and got a 30S as a retake (originally 28P). I just graduated with a 3.6 (3.5 sci) from a FL university. I know the best way to have a great shot is to apply early so I am just looking for advice on which schools to look into.

I have lots of ECs and clinical experience (check my MDapps link) and am currently working as a study coordinator on a clinical research trial. I would honestly say I'm strong in all areas except my PS (which im working on) and my numbers.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Here is my tentative school list:
-Florida State University College of Medicine

-University of Florida College of Medicine

-University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

-University of Central Florida College of Medicine

-University of Vermont College of Medicine

-New York Medical College

-Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University

-Tulane University School of Medicine

-Brown Medical School

-The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences

-Georgetown University School of Medicine

Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans

-University of South Florida College of Medicine

-Creighton University School of Medicine

-Albany Medical College

-Drexel University College of Medicine

-Temple University College of Medicine

University of Texas Medical School at Galveston

University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio

-Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine

Again, any advice would be appreciated as I know some of these schools are a reach, and I am limited in my choices

Some are reach, some are in range. I beleive applying to some schools you haven't applied to before is also important... Are there "non-reach" schools on that list that are "new"?

Apply to 20 schools and you'll get in. 3.6 and 30 is too good to not get in.

Schools I applied to last time:

FSU*
USF
UF
UM
UCF
FIU*
Iowa*
Morehouse
NYMC*
Vermont*
Jefferson*

I asterisk'd the schools I completed secondaries for last time. I applied extremely late last year which is why I think I didn't get any love from any of those schools.

how can I make my research look meaningful though I don't have a publication?

oops double post

Can anyone offer any schools to add to my list?

from a quick read i would also add st. louis university and penn state to the list. im pretty sure that jefferson averages your mcats so that might hurt your chances slightly...

have you used the school selector tool/spreadsheet from sdn? that definitely helped me see sort of how i fit numerically into a lot of schools

Yeah I've tried it out but, especially in my situation where my numbers aren't my strength, i feel like it's a bit skewed. I'll check it out again though, thanks.

I would have to disagree with this statement.

I have met MANY reapp's on the interview trail during the past 2 app cycles that have 30+ MCAT and 3.6+ GPA with solid EC's who have been rejected to many, many, many schools.

I, myself, am such an applicant - I have racked up over 35 rejections from 2007 - 2009.

Nonetheless...it looks like you have a solid application. Seeing that you are applying broadly, I am sure you will get an interview somewhere - even apply to a few D.O. schools - the application is very similar to the AMCAS one.

Best wishes - get that APP in on June 2!!

The UT schools are required by law to accept no more than 10% out of state. You might want to look into more out of state friendly schools.

Do you mean no more than 10% out of state, or no less than 10%?

The Texas schools are a separate app than AMCAS, correct?

I appreciate the comments. Did your rejections come post-interview? My application season last year was a joke mainly because I turned the secondaries I actually completed in November. So this is me starting from scratch, for the most part. I have everything done except my final draft of my PS and am ready to submit for June 2nd!

As far as the D.O. comment goes, I am 100% certain that I do not want to go D.O. I have my reasons. I would rather go Carib M.D. if I absolutely had to.

took off LSU and added SLU and PSU

I think you stand a pretty good shot at Florida schools. Maybe not UF but most of the others are at least interview range. Hell, my stats were way below yours and I got an interview from FSU and FIU.

Understandable, FSU and FIU are at the lower end of the spectrum in the public's eye (although, I think FSU has a great medical program). I think if I apply as early as I intend to, I have a good shot at both those schools. I'd like to have an OOS interview or two, just so I have the option. Good luck to you

What do you think about this final school list? Should I take off Rush or Wake Forest?

FSU
UF
UMiami
UCF
Vermont
NYMC
Jefferson
Tulane
GWU
Rush
Georgetown
USF
Creighton
Albany
Drexel
Loyola
Wake Forest
SLU
Mich State
FIU

If I were you I would take off MSU and Vermont and replace them with Medical College of Wisconsin and Rosalind Franklin. Much better OOS acceptance statistics, since they're private and more friendly tuitions if you do get in.

I won't take off MSU because I have a legitimate interest in going there, as well as Vermont because I grew up in New England. I don't plan on adding MCW because I would never want to live in Wisconsin. As far as Rosalind Franklin, I wasn't too convinced to apply there after reading their MSAR page. I mean 41k tuition for OOS isn't too shabby, but 8522 apps received, only 418 interviewed and 97 matriculated. Are those bad stats? Also, secondary not screened (which is understandable I suppose when 8522 people apply to your school... that's potentially 85k in application fees) . I think they're a little out of my stat range compared to Rush (3.8/3.8 31Q avg compared to Rush's 3.6/3.6 31Q). Am I being rational here?

Eh. I think RFU is a good school and even if the averages are higher, you'd still have a good chance. If you need more, it couldn't hurt.

I'd like to keep 20 schools, do you have a suggestion for one I should drop then?

I turned in my final list today. I decided not to add RFU because I just felt like I would not have a good chance there. I would not have added Illinois either, because if I was going to go to that state, I'd only go to Chicago. I think the 20 schools I listed is a decent mix and I think my OOS odds are slim anyway, so the state schools are the ones I'm going to have to focus on anyway. Thank god I live in FL.

Do not apply to Creighton University. I go there as an undergrad and they will not accept your GPA or MCAT. Scratch that = Don't apply at all.

Just to follow up, I ended up having a 3.5/3.4sci GPA, and have already gotten 3 interviews. I would suggest to others in my situation to just apply early!

Wow, this makes me feel like I waited too long. I have similar stats (tiny, tiny bit higher) and still no good news from anybody.

Good luck! Now I know to submit the first day next year if I need to!

congrats man.. we have the exact same stats (3.65, 30S) and I have also received 3 interviews..

Good luck

I can't help but root hard for guys like you!😀 Best of luck, my stats are similar (3.9+ GPA, 30MCAT).

I've been complete about 10 days and have 1 interview so far, but I HOPE I get more 😉

GOOD LUCK!!

GOOD LUCK!!

3.9+ and 3.6 are not 'similar stats...'

But congratulations on your interview

I don't know why everyone is so against going D.O. I know a guy from OU who got a 38M and he applied D.O. Anyways, you should apply early. Apply to a place you could see yourself living in 4 yrs.
